Picture/video flash

Post by BugsSnow&Milly » Mon Jan 31, 2022 11:34 pm

Hi!
I haven’t been able to find a solid answer on whether flash is harmful to crabs, rather than opinion. Has anyone found research on this? I like to take pictures and very rarely take videos, with flash, of my crabs. They never seem bothered by the light, but I’m not sure if they’re stunned (which normally they would hide in their shell to show discomfort if so) or if they don’t mind. Either way, I’m wondering more long term if it can damage their eyes or if anyone has a more concrete answer in addition to what’s previously been answered about this.

Thanks for your time and replies 😊😊
Kind regards,
Bugs, Snow, Milly, & Mom ❤️

Damage requires a combination of duration and intensity. Typically flash photography may disrupt night-vision (temporary blindness) but won’t cause permanent damage.

Research into photic retinopathy has not been explored in hermit crabs (to my knowledge) but has been in mammals.

Totally anecdotal, but I've taken 12K+ photos of my crabs over the years YES I HAVE A PROBLEM OKAY and have never noticed any health issues from it.

Admitting you have a problem is the first step. Now we just have to find you the help you need.
