Crabs eating wire for digital thermometer/hydrometer

Post by CrazyCrab12 » Wed Dec 14, 2016 1:44 pm

I feel so stupid. I was raving about the fancy electronic themometer/hydrometer my dad purchased for me last christmas. I just got home from college about a week ago so i decided to clean out the crab tank, and re-arange the 'furniture'. As i pulled out the sensor to the thermometer, i noticed several pieces of exposed wire. It was clearly damaged by crabby claws. I coincidently havent seen any crabs since early november too...i hope it's not related. Its down to the copper in some parts. Can any of you recommend a digital thermometer and/or hydrometer that is crab proof?

AcuRite from Wal-Mart. They cost less than $10. Make sure you calibrated it first.

Oh nooooooooes!
Other than the suggestion above, try any household hygro/thermo for household use that doesn't have wires - they're just little boxes. Hardware stores and places like Walmart sell them.
Good luck!

If they do have a sensor that's not attached to the original box - except for a wire - then crab proofing it with airline hose does help. Dont worry, my crabs managed to short circuit my house a few weeks back as they cut through the cord of my filter in my SW pool... Which was just under water.... (loud bang, smoke and everything. :/) Airline hose does help stop them from cutting through everything though.

I'm trying to do some troubleshooting for my crab that has not come up from a molt.... Remembering November of last yfor the last year I discovered an old stick on thermometer.... That the crab was eating pieces of. Wondering now if that has poisoned him and just didn't take effect until this past month. :(
