What kind of topper/lid would work the best for my 40-gallon long tank? It does not have a center brace (it never did but also wasn't broken off before I got it) I'm open to all ideas, but I would prefer something that I can use a light with. My make-shift DIY lid is not working as well as I had hoped.
Thank you!

It sounds like you have a 40 gal breeder tank. If so, this glass lid would work for you:

I also have a 40 gal breeder with this top. I use it as a freshwater aquarium though. But it's perfectly fine to use with regular daylight bulbs (no heat).

This would also work. You'd just have to cover it in saran wrap to keep moisture in:

I don't think that will work. The dimensions of my tank are 48x12. I think I might have to DIY a center brace and then I should be able to use 2 of the 24x12 hoods. Thank you though!!

Unfortunately the standard for that dimension is a 55 gallon, and for the last 30 or so years those have been made with a central brace so the glass could be thinner. The lids are made to match. The old 55s which weigh more than a person while empty had thick enough glass to not need a brace.
Could do a screen lid and use plastic on top. There are ones that have a central hinge that runs the short way, which help with self supporting.
