Crab sitting in saltwater pool

Post by Brian_T » Wed Apr 13, 2022 6:37 am

Right now one of my crabs is just sitting in the Salt water pool, completely submerged. I've never seen that before. Should I be concerned?

He's moving a bit but not really struggling or anything.

Have you had this crab and this setup for some time?

I would think as long as he has access in/out, all is well and it looks like you've got plastic mesh for that. It's hard to tell from the pic, but I'd try to avoid having the plastic mesh flat against the pool wall. I try to keep them set like ramps for easier in/out.
Two 29gals. 3 PPs in each.
~200gal of fish tanks. Mostly planted community tanks.
Multiple kiddos, doggies and kitties.

There's about a half inch of space between the mesh and the wall. I've seen the crabs climbing up and down on it without a problem.

Update, after googling all the information I could find said that the crab should be able to stay underwater for up to a half hour. I don't know how long he was under since he was there when I woke up. So after a half hour, I got concerned and moved him and he seemed fine.

Anyway, I just went and caught him in the act of carefully climbing back down the mesh and back into the pool. So it appears he didn't fall in as I was concerned. I started a timer to see how long he actually stays down. Might be time to update the manual again.

So he stayed in the water for about 8 and a half hours and just climbed out without assistance.

Seems to be just fine.
