Crab stays buried and come up a few times

Post by Kinah19 » Sat Sep 17, 2022 11:49 pm

For the last month or so my crabs have been burying themselves under the sand and stays weeks at a time to the point I lose count of how long they’ve been under. Sometimes they come up for a little but goes right back under the same day for more weeks at a time. Does anyone knows what this mean? Or is their something I need to do? Even though they are buried I still change food and water.

Keep up the food and water changes. Many times hermit crabs like to burrow around in the substrate and they will stay under fir a while sometimes if they like it. Another reason is if the conditions how their habitat are not right (temp and humidity off) at which point they will burrow in order to hibernate from the less than ideal conditions. Lastly if they are molting they will bury themselves for a long time.

Crabs don't hiberbnate.
Crabs like to dig, and many will spend time underground, it's totally normal. Do you have lots of hiding spots for them up top, like coco huts and greenery? If they have places to find shelter and be safe up top, they may not need to go underground to do so.

I find my crabs like hiding in caves that are placed next to the heater that gets upwards of 85+ degrees and very high humidity inside of it. Maybe try placing some hides next to a heater.
