am I the only person in love with magpie shells?

This is where you discuss shells for your hermit crabs. Not for selling/swapping shells, use Classified Ads for that.

am I the only person in love with magpie shells?

Post by Quinnthescrub » Thu May 04, 2023 2:49 pm

I love these shells. Period. These are the shells that purple pinchers use in the wild. I think they're prettier than turbo shells. I wish my shell shops were half pica shells. I also like other native shells. I like the idea of having them in my crabitat because it is the species that the crabs all know and mostly love.

They are pretty, but tbh, my hermits refuse to wear them. I gave all of mine to Mike Vukoder to take to the keys for the wild crabs.
Truly blessed to have incredible creatures, wonderful friends and my amazing family in my life!! I'm very thankful & grateful for all of them! www.thehealthyhermit.com

My guys don't wear them either. I adopted a crab that was wearing one, and she changed within the first week I had her.

Mike lives in Florida, so that's why he takes the shells down there for the wild hermits. I may have 2 or 3 magpie shells here still hanging around. I'll be giving those to Mike for the wild crabbies when I get enough stuff together to make a shipment .

The only reason I keep all my turbos is because I tend to adopt a crab here and there every year. I once gave away many of my smaller shells to someone, and then adopted a small crab. I had to rebuy small shells again. I never know what size crab someone is going to give me, so I just keep all my turbos now. Image

One of my crabs wore one for a short time, not even long enough for me to take a photo LOL.

I actually adopted a little girl a few weeks ago, about the size of a quarter! So I pulled out those tiny shells for her, and she changed up within a day or so lol! Her current shell opening is only about 1/2" wide. She's been under for a couple of weeks now though. Image
