Crabs will try to establish a 'pecking order' so to speak. To minimize the chances of aggression, try giving both the new and the old one a quick dip in the fresh water so that they both smell the same and nobody seems 'new' to the tank.
If a crab dies, you don't need to do any special cleaning or sanitzing the tank or sub.
It's hard to say what happened. If he dropped his shell because he was weak, and then went underground and died, he would decompose very quickly and you may only find a few bits and pieces.
Do you have at least 3 to 5 extra shells per crab for them to choose from?

I do now. I have several in there and they’ve changed shells frequently trying to find the right one. They appear to be getting along fine now that both have a new shell. We had quite a few in there but they were painted from the shore and I guess they didn’t care for them
