Molting or death?

Post by HermitCrabs8763 » Sat Nov 04, 2023 9:27 pm

I recently (as in about 2 months ago) got a new crab. Her name is Bella. She buried herself as she has been doing on and off for the past two months. This time, however, she has been down for a much longer time than usual (maybe 1 month). I am starting to get worried as it may be PPS and I still do not have a heating pad so the tank temp has been dropping to high sixties recently. Should I dig her up or leave her be? My other crabs have also been less energetic. Is this a cause for concern? What should I do?

You need to get a heat mat ASAP and raise the temperature to a safe level in your tank.
What is your humidity reading?
There is no benefit to digging her up - if she is dead there is nothing you can do, but if she is molting you may disturb her at a critical time may be deadly to her.
PPS is a possibility, but so is the low temp.

78 is a fine humidity, 70 is getting low. Have you read the care sheet?

The humidity is around 75 and stays there, but I was trying to move some thing from the top of my tank and the top fell off and the part landed right next to where he’s molting so I can barely see him in there but also can’t tell if he’s alive or dead pls help

The humidity is at usually around 70-75 the heat is usually at around 60-70 as it is a cold autumn where I live.

Crabs will not survive with temps of 60-70. You need to get a heat mat to bring the temp in your tank to a safe level.
And when your temp goes up, your humidity will drop so you need it to be higher too.
Have you read through the care sheets yet?
