I think I've lost my crab
I think I've lost my crab
Yesterday one of my crabs walked around the terrarium and ate. Today I decided to pour some sand into the terrarium, but I did not notice that one of the crabs was missing. I mixed the old sand with the new one and I'm afraid I just might have covered the crab with sand. My crabs are very small, they are the size of one phalanx of a finger and I am afraid that I could accidentally fill it with sand.. Will he be able to get out of there? What should I do? (

Uh, I just found it by accident. The crab dug into the sand. I hope he wasn't going to shed..

When you found the crab, how did it look? What is she doing now? Did you isolate her from your other crabs?

She was in her shell. When I got her out, she crawled away to her favorite house. In fact, she always sits in that cabin during the day, so I think it's okay for hercurlysister wrote:When you found the crab, how did it look? What is she doing now? Did you isolate her from your other crabs?

My hermit crab is buried in the sand again. He made a lot of holes in the sand, so I'm not sure exactly where he is.. How long do small hermit crabs molt? And how should I moisten the sand at this time? Should I use a pulverizer?curlysister wrote:When you found the crab, how did it look? What is she doing now? Did you isolate her from your other crabs?

Small crabs will take a couple weeks to molt. To moisten the sand either spray it or pour small amounts of water along the sides of the tank

Re: I think I've lost my crab
Thank you. Now my crab is behaving strangely he has been just digging sand for two days. Yesterday he made a huge tunnel in the sand, and today he just made a bunch of holes in the sand. Is he getting ready to molt?JoeHermits wrote:Small crabs will take a couple weeks to molt. To moisten the sand either spray it or pour small amounts of water along the sides of the tank

He might be getting ready to molt. If you don’t see it for a few days don’t worry, it’s normal. Still set out enough food and change the water. When I first got my hermies they molted and I thought they were dead but still set out the necessities in hope. I saw them four months later, and hurried to get NATURAL shells for them, no paint, because it is very toxic for them. Just take care of your crabs, and don’t change the substrate when they’re in there, they’re very vulnerable and emotionally unstable, and they can die if the get scared when they’re naked.
Hope this helps!

Crabs don't leave their shells when they molt - if a crab is naked, it is an emergency and needs to be treated as such. We have a care sheet that says what to do.Iluvcrabbys wrote: ↑Mon Mar 25, 2024 1:23 pmHe might be getting ready to molt. If you don’t see it for a few days don’t worry, it’s normal. Crabs will not die if they get scared, they really are not emotionally unstable.
