Should I change something or add something to my crab house?
Should I change something or add something to my crab house?
Hello again, everyone. I'm wondering if I should add anything or change anything to my crab house? I have 3 small crabs living here
Container capacity: 25 gallons
Temperature in the warm corner of the container: 78.8f.
Total temperature: 78.0f.
Sand depth is approximately 10 centimeters deep
Sand and coconut substrate mix approximately 60/40
There are 2 water containers. One with salt water and one with fresh water. I change the water every 2-3 days
Humidity: 75-90%
I moisturize the container every day
All shells, glass starfish are safe for crabs
I usually feed my crabs dried insects, dried shrimp, eggshells, shells, nuts, fruit
I know my crab house looks like some kind of mess or something right now xD, I'm still working on it

the tank is great! except for the ten centimeter sand. The sand should be much deeper in order for the hermit crabs to molt properly. but this is much better than when i got my first tank! (if this is your first tank, Its still great)

HCA recommends that substrate be 2-3 times as deep as the largest crab.hermitsssss wrote: ↑Sat May 11, 2024 7:09 pmthe tank is great! except for the ten centimeter sand. Thanks! My crabs are very small, about 2-3 centimeters, so I think they will have enough sand depth for now. I recently bought a new crab and it immediately dug into the sand, so I did not dare to pour more sand on ithermitsssss wrote:the tank is great! except for the ten centimeter sand. I wanted to ask you, is it normal that a new crab immediately burrowed into the sand? (I bought this a few days ago) I know that new crabs usually behave very strangely, but my other crabs didn't do that. The new baby buried himself in the sand on the first day and I still don't see him. I also don't smell dead fish or anything like thatcurlysister wrote: HCA recommends that substrate be 2-3 times as deep as the largest crab.

yes, that is normal because new hermit crabs are easily stressed, so dont dig him/her up unless their is an emergency(flood/ bacterial bloom, prob wont happen in shallow sand though) or if their a stenchyame1324 wrote: ↑Sun May 12, 2024 4:58 amI wanted to ask you, is it normal that a new crab immediately burrowed into the sand? A new crab might dig underground to de-stress, or it might have been quite a while since it had enough substrate to molt in. I would not be worried at all.yame1324 wrote: ↑Sun May 12, 2024 4:58 amI wanted to ask you, is it normal that a new crab immediately burrowed into the sand? What do you mean? If we are talking about colored starfish, they are safe because they are made of glass. The blue food bowl is made of safe plastic. Green plants are plants for aquarium fishhermitsssss wrote:this is a bit of a late reply, but i think i see some Painted decorations in there? if there is remove them as paint is toxic

That setup is fine, just add or remove whatever makes you (and the crabs) happy
