Crab not moving for 3 days

Post by Gabbybg320 » Mon Jul 15, 2024 12:07 pm

Hello! I am a new crab owner and bought two crabs from a beach gift shop last week, Sunday July 7th. After tons of research, I wanted to set up my crabs with the best possible outcome given what they went through to get to the store. I have two crabs, Sushi & Pip. Both were very active in the tank the first two days I received them. I have about 4 shells different sizes per crab, so 8 shells in tank all together. Sushi has changed shells 3 times, Pip has not. The sizes range from just under an inch to an inch and a quarter opening, they both came with shells about an inch wide. I feed them different mixtures of hermit crab food from Amazon along with worm castings left in the tank 24/7. They have a salt water and fresh water pools I treat with Prime. The temp is just over 70 degrees and humidity is just under 80. Right now the sand and eco earth mixture is about an inch in the tank to follow Crab Central Station's YouTube video on post purchase stress. I plan on increasing the sand over the next few weeks.

Pip has not moved for 3 days now while Sushi is very active. I set up a night camera by the tank and confirmed there is no movement from Pip overnight either. He stays in the same spot under a log decoration but is not dead or smells dead. I have not lifted him to reduce his stress but can see small movements from under his shell. Is this normal? Sushi moves around all night and eats all the food I leave in the tank along with the leaves scattered for foraging. I am very concerned about Pip and the possibility of a surface molt. Thanks in advance!

If a crab needs to molt, it can't put it off for our schedule. Put in deep enough substrate so that it can bury and molt if it needs to. There is no evidence that any specific method improves survival rates - and a surface molt can be more dangerous than underground. The temp at 70 is a bit low, over 72 and closer to 80 is better. Crabs are more active closer to 80.
All you can do is keep your tank conditions ideal (including sub), and provide some high energy foods like peanut butter and honey.

Thanks! I will increase substrate & get a larger heating pad for the tank. He stood up last night but quickly went back down into this hiding position shortly after, did not move around the tank.
