the grass mats?

Post by Guest » Fri Jul 22, 2005 3:30 pm

has anyone seen or used those grass mats they sell at pet stores for lizards? they look kinda neat. you can cut them to any size, and they grow grass, i think the seeds are inside the mat part, i think it's made of coconut or something? just wondering if anyone's used them or seen them, thought the crabberts might like them. let me know, i'll try to find a pic of them online in the meantime incase no one knows what i'm talking about.

Hey I've seen those before, but I dont really know if hermit crabs would like it as a substrate. I have never heard of anyone use them before. If you do use it, tell us how it goes.

I know exactly what mat you're talking about ;) I actually bought one but never ended up using it. :? I wanted to do a little bit more research first before I used it, just to make sure it was safe. Also, what I was thinking about using it for was as a covering for a second level platform/platforms. But I ended up using different items for the various levels instead of "platforms," so it hasn't gotten used lol

lol! my only concern was that they might have fertilizers in it. but i guess if it's supposed to be safe for the reptiles...

i wouldn't use it as their only substrate, i was thinking of cutting little squares out of it and putting it in for a fun jungle-y thing. i grow them clover sprouts in feeder shells using eco-earth for dirt, and they love it; but they make such a horrible mess with the EE. i thought this might be a way they could have sprouts more often, since the clovers take almost a week to get big enough before i put them in and let them destroy them :D

thanks, if anyone does try it let me know how yours goes. the next time i get out to the pet store i'm going to get some now to try it. i like giving them the fresh sprouts, but the last time i ended up accidently watering them with IO and then forgot to water them again after that! i'm thinking this will be an easier way to grow them with less of a mess.

the micros are so cute with sprouts! the clover sprouts are actually big enough to support their weight, and they climb up them to the top. too cute, like a little jungle for those guys
