What is Circut City doing selling Pet stuff? Are they going to start selling crabs too?

This is an electronics store, what are they thinking?

This is very very sad but this thing knows more about hermit crabs than most all pet stores near me

I left a review that fit within the guidelines, we'll see.

Also, did you see where you get your crabs by mail order?

I tried submitting a review about proper hermit care, and got an error sending it...
Something tells me they've turned off reviews for this product.

BTW, for the longest time, I couldn't access this thread... It just wouldn't load up at all yesterday... weird lol.

i think they're selling it cos they also sell other Discovery Kids kits like it. i've seen it at a Brookstone, and i thought at Toys R Us before. crabs arne't actually included in the kit, you mail away for them. i'm sure FMR probably snuck their way into this little dealy-o somehow... :| poor crabbies. although i think that this kit is better than the ones that they sell in the pet stores that come with a Kritter Karrier, but that's about the only good thing i can say about it. i read the directions (for as long as i could stand to) and they go on an on and on about molting, but a crab's never going to molt in there. and they never mention anything about proper humidity. they just say that the little sea sponge will provide enough humidity. and they never say anything about having to clean it... it just goes on and on like that. it's awful.

on a plositive note- a lot of the crab kiosks here are closing or slowly changing to beta/bamboo (for some reason), so i'm hopeing ::fingers crossed and wishing really hard:: that the crab fad is coming to a close around here. just wishful thinking :)

I did the math, and according to their specifications, it has a volume of about 5 gallons (US).

Im so mad, Petco is pushing the plastic crate and tell you, you don't need a heater, you dont need anything but tap water, a hut, some dirt ( NOT SAND ) some dirt from the backyard and some food.

I jumped in IMMEDIATELY.. interrupted the manager and told the lady what she needed. They had just RETURNED the thing to Circuit City in Arbor Land Mall 20 minutes before. Said that when they got it home half the things inside had been opened before and there was still sand in the bottom from the last owner. She said that they were having 'trouble' with the kits and had a lot of returns.

I talked to the manager and she said that they are not bringing the kits back next year. HIP HIP HORRAY!! but I'm waiting.......

ALSO WALMART DOES NOT SELL HERMITS IN THE CUP ANYMORE!!!!! I was going to rescue some earlier and the pet dept let me know that they refuse to sell them with all the 'rif raf' they had to listen to over it.

I WAS THRILLED!!! MAYBE WE ARE GETTING HEARD!

OMG! This is so great! I was only hoping that someday someone could change the world of land hermit crabs but I never knew it would be so soon! We always vent and occasionally angrilly (spelling?) fight back but now that it appears to actually start to make a difference.. WOW! You know, this means we are saving lives! I'm SOOOO happy!

There is one thing I must warn myself and all others about. We can inform people and they will often change their ways. Not to be Pessimistic, but we can never change people and I fear there may be people we cannot stop. :( However, if it's not longer a fad, the worst of us will no longer waste their time trying to obtain their one true love, money. :)

Wow.. they sure put a lot of thought into it when designing that product. :/ Anyway, at least all the reviews gave it low ratings..

This is what I wrote

Subject line : Hermit Crabs Deserve Better.

Review: This product does NOT meet the requirements to keep a healthy hermit crab. It is a ploy to sell a "cute" item that does not have the crabs best interest at heart...just the corporation's wallet.

and I gave it the lowest rating possible

**Who knows if they'll publish it.

I was at the Discovery Channel store a few months ago and saw a lady looking at one of those kits. I made a beeline over there and just started talking to her.

(me) - "hmmm... you know that is not a very good house for a hermit crab"
(her) - *silence*
(me) - "hermit crabs require many other things including sand and humidity."
(her) - *looks uncomfortable*
(me) - "I can't believe they are selling that. No crab could live in that."
(her) - *puts down cage and walks out of the store quickly but silently*

I do the same thing at the souvenier shops around my house (lots of dying hermies in huge wire cages with dumb people buying kritter karriers and gravel). I don't try to talk people out of buying them, I just want them to take proper care of them!

and if someone looks uncomfortable and doesn't want to hear about proper hermie care, then they probably don't really care if they die or not. they're probably just buying them as a cute pet for a child and don't care as long as it makes the kid happy for a little while.

then again, i've spoke to quite a few parents in pet stores who are about to get the kits (the plastic KK and the gross colored sand and bad shells), and they are usually interested, and walk out of there with all the right tools and stuff (along with a HCA care sheet from me  ). those are the people who i know are going to take care of the crabbies cos they're willing to figure out exactly what really needs to be done.

so don't give up hope educating the public! it can be done! :D
