In my family, pets always get buried (except fish). I haven't lost any hermies yet (I've had them for about 3 or 4 weeks), but I will definitely at least wrap them up in something before burying them. My rabbit was very sick when she died, and my dad dug a shallow hole and just shoved her in, it was awful and I wouldn't walk near that spot for 3 years, because I had that image in my mind, and I kept thinking about how I would be standing on her... it just really freaks me out, so every other pet gets a box or a towel or something.

I was going to take him back to the pet store to get my money back but they would have just thrown his little body into the trash and I couldn't allow that. There are some things that getting the money is just not worth. He was a good little crab and deserved a decent burial even though I just had him for 7 days.
Whatever you decide has to be right in your heart.
Just so you know, if you get a decent salesperson they will let you take it back home with you for burial, after you show it to them for proof that it died (to get the replacement). I've not had many die within the time frame, but I've brought 3 back home with me so far.

I have to figure this out as I just had my favorite hermit die. I can't bury him as this is not my house and we are just renting. I think that the only way I will do this is to wrap him up in some plastic bags and just place him in the garbage. I hate doing this but flushing won't work as he is to large and ripping up the yard won't be good after we move out. Plus my cat would dig him up. To many complications...

Do you have a park near your house? I've buried some of my pets in parks when I didn't have a backyard or garden.

Sadly the nearest park is just desert land. It's illegal to dig there and the earth is way to hard anyways.

disposing of hermie

Post by Guest » Tue Sep 27, 2005 2:20 pm

I will probably do the ziploc thing to dispose of my hermies. Funerals are for the survivor, so you should decide whether YOU need closure that way. As for the shell, in the wild, all hermies leave their shell behind for the next generation. I would take the shell, boiling it before recycling.
My sister lost a crab and she had her husband dispose of it so that she wouldn't really have to know how it went down.
