stupid question, but, do you put the Jar on the outside of the tank and one the second peice of tube into the tank, or do you put the jar inside the crabitat?

Either way. I started out with it outside the tank with just the tube hanging in the tat (I think most are like this). When I ran out of room on my table, I put it in the corner of the tat. This also prevents the humid water from having to go too far up the tube before getting to the tank. Now my worry is if it is too loud for the hermies!

I finished my humidifer last Sunday. It helped in the iso tank for the first few days quite a lot (accidently got it to 90% once lol), however I think some of the humid air is seeping through the holes for the tubing. Need to figure a way to seal it up.

I may actually just use the pump for a bubble saltwater pool, since my humidity rarely drops below 78%, if I can figure out how the heck to hold down the airstone and tubing! I just got a large plastic tray that is reallly deep, and already have seen quite a few going for a swim.

jus a question, the tube that's supposed to be feeding the moist air into tat, is it normal to be dripping water?

My Air Tube leading into the tat does not drip Water...That Same Air Tube U are describing...The 1 that Leads from the Jug...Is that Air tube in the water in the Jug...or is it In the Air Space Above the water?...Or...Maybe..And I get this too...Condensation inside the Air Tube.

I think I set up as described in the previous posts..

I have two tubes w/ air stones in the water in an air tight container and one tube from the air in the container going into the tank.

I have a few questions...

How far into the tank is the tube inserted? 55 gal.

How long does it take to see an improvment in humidity?

Should I see condensation in the tube? havent seen any so far

Ive had the humidifier in place for about 45 minutes now and so far all Ive seen is a reduction in humidity

exactly what I didnt want

Im constantly misting to improve humidity w/o misting the gauge will go to 60

I thought the DIY humidifier would help.. maybe Im just not giving it enuff time

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I also have a 55g. I have one humidifier on each side. The tubes just hang about 1/2 way down the tank in mine. THey do drip water (just a little) and the crabs love that spot because the sand is always wet.
I set my last one up at night, and the RH went from 60 to 80 overnight. Give it a bit more time. Make sure the lid is on so that the RH isn't escaping.

I kinda freaked out when the gauge went from 60 to 50.. Im so impatient, I should have given it more time

I misted the tank and its sitting on 75-80 and so far maintaining

Maybe it just needed misting to give it a kick start! lol

I'm sort of new to hermit crabs, so what is an airstone? I've always been misting my brother's terrarium for him, after he forgets to put the towel that we keep on it back over the top (it's one of those kritter keepers).

An air stone is just a basic part of a fish tank. You can pick one up at any pet store for less than a couple bucks. You will need an air pump and tubing, as well.

Generally, they are blue or green, have a small tubing section (that you stick into the tubing coming from the air pump). The air goes into the stone, and then gets forced out of very small holes, causing small bubbles.

Call me crazy but wouldn't it be easier to put a jar/bottle of water in the tank, stick an airstone in it attached to a pump you keep outside the tank. You would get all the humidity instantly in the tank. If you use a high soda bottle with a narrow neck you would have no worries about crabs crawling in it.

Esentially, that is what is happening, but to keep the jar from taking up space in the tank, the tube is used to get the air from the jar to the tank. Also, the lid is used to keep crabs from falling in if you have it in the tank like I do.

To answer 1crabbymommy's question: I do have 2 separate air pumps, but only because the first humidifier was using an old 1 outlet pump. When I set up my 2nd humidifier, I bought a pump with 2 outlets. You could use the same pump if you have long enough tubing. I just use the 3rd outlet for a bubbler pool.

Well, he upgraded to a MiniBow 2.5, and I really noticed how low the humidity is after letting him borrow the gauges I bought. Tonight I made the DIY humidifier, and the humidity wasn't really going up (after only about 45 minutes of use). I will try it again some other time for a longer period to really test its metal.

Here are some pictures of it:

It was a constructive project. Should I add a sponge? I tried it, and it made less air come out. I can play around with this thing to get it just right.

Edit: I got the airstones at Petco for $1.99, and a T-valve for 99 cents. I got the tubing from my house (we had some goldfish at some point). I never knew that this stuff is so inexpensive.
