driftwood and fish nets

Post by Guest » Thu Mar 09, 2006 9:52 am

I have noticed the when i bought fish nets from walmart and boiled them all the varnish/dye came off..this can't be healthy for my crab family?
also friend sent me some drift wood from NC thought it would be safe but something to me to boil it first ..OMG! to my horror  it must have been soaked in varnish/boat fuel/oil. almost burned my kitchen up. I know i just saved the lives of 7 crabs not to mention avoiding breaking my heart. :) My friend feels really bad..told him how'd he know driftwood floating on the beach could be from anywhere..I have looked long and hard for a nice piece of driftwood that won't cost me an arm or a leg.any suggestion?
Is this varnish/dye safe for crabs or should everything be boiled first?
thanks
Maggie

I got stuff like the fish netting from walmart. The stuff had soap in the fabric, so couldn't even use it :(

The pet store charge so much. hard to find items to inprove the crabatat with out giving an arm or leg. And after today's disaster real afraid to stick anything in the tank

I go to school in Rochester. Once it warms up, I am going to go to the coast of lake ontario and see if I can find some driftwood. If I find any good pieces, I will let you know and if you pay the shipping, I'll send it to ya :)
