Reviews about ZooMed Salt Water Mixture anybody? Just got it and was wondering if its safe to use...

i got it because the petstore recomended it but havent used it it i use oceanic or something like that..

Yea, my sister got it from Petsmart or something like that because they suggested it and she didnt' know what I needed, so I was just wondering if its good or not.

that stuff is junk! it needs to be something like 5 times stronger to actually be like real salt water... something like instant ocean which is a mix meant for fish would be much better. stuff marketed for hermies is typically junk.

I used to use it but found that the sea salt mix was not strong enough... not to mention in the long run it costs more to use it then to mix your own up.

My hermie's are responding better to a sea salt mix that I purchase premixed from a store they use in their coral vat. I'm afraid my zoomed salt water was not the correct balance.

I'd say to REALLY check it out... either purchase a kit that checks the sea salt's balances, or mix some up and take it into a pet store that will check it for you for free. (Call first to make sure they will.)

I agree with BAB - either test it yourself or see if a pet store will... if you mix that stuff according to the directions on the package, it isn't strong enough.

I don't have enough money to buy the stuff you all buy, its so expensive in my part of the state because not a lot of people use it, so of course it costs more to ship it this way for not a lot of sales. I'll try to get something eventually I guess, but like I said not enough money. Can my crab live on this for awhile...at least its some salt? Can I just add extra mixture to the mixture I have made, or will that be too much?

Mine survived on it for awhile... and then I had E's with bad molts. Lost one. I'm not sure if it was totally the sea salt water mix or maybe I missed something in their diets... but it was not fun. All crabbies need it for their shell water.

One way that I'd recommend you to check it is to get the test kit or take a sample of your mixed water to a store (and it may just be free) that will test it for you. I cannot find the post that had the reading it needs to be... but going from memory I think it's around 1.02?

I did test it....you have to use 5 teaspoons per cup of water to make it about the same strength as sea water. This will make the water very yellow and it's way expensive, too.

Tinster---you say that nobody in your area uses aquarium salt, but you'd be surprised at how many people keep salt water fish. If there's a PetCo in your area, you can get a 5 gallon (2 1/2 cups of salt) mix of Oceanic for about $5.00, and if you have a Wal-Mart in your area, you can get 16 ounces (2 cups) of Doc Wellfish for about $2.00. If you don't have these stores, you can go to a small pet store (one that has fish) and ask them if they'd sell you a small amount of aquarium salt---since they use it all the time, it shouldn't be a problem. All the major brands of salt will mix properly at 1/2 cup of salt per gallon of water (2 tablespoons per quart). Another brand you can usually find at pet stores (even those that don't have marine fish) is Jungle Aquarium Salt. It will probebly be in the goldfish section, because people put small amounts in their goldfish water for osmotic balance. Don't be afraid to ask a pet store employee, sometimes it's hard to find stuff on the shelves.

If you keep using the ZooMed stuff, you will start to have problems eventually, either from the lack of salt or the artificial coloring.

Thanks Willow you helped me out a lot! I will hopefully have new sea salt mix this weekend, would Oceanic Natural Sea Salt Mix work? My sister saw it at a store and asked the worker about it and he said it would work, so she picked it up for me and I can get it this weekend. So hopefully Taz can survive till this weekend? Sound I take the salt water out till then, do you think he could survive without salt water till then (I mean he just went a month without it and is still good)? I don't want to keep it in there and cause damage.
