Coenobita Violascens Nickname

Post by Guest » Tue Mar 28, 2006 6:22 pm

Due to a recent poll by Mokulele_Hawai'i showing some beautiful photos of his Coenobita Violascens, we have somewhat decided to try and come up with an official nickname for the species. Reference photos are here.... viewtopic.php?p=300987#300987 (they are incredible.) I'm putting this up to take any suggestions, and then 2 weeks from today will complile them together in a poll. So far we have two current suggestions....

Blues and Violets. Not the most creative, but certainly fitting.

Dont want to burst the Bubble..BUT! mokulele's Crab is a C.Violascens
And Not a C.Variabilis...Variabilis are known as the Australian Crazy Crab...
The C.Violascens has no Nick name as yet.
Hence the Violet Nickname at this Point.
The Aussie CC more closely resembles the E.
Thanks

Why not stick with the obvious like

PP for purple pinch....obvious

Ruggie for Rugosus....obvious

E for ecuadorians....obvious

Cave's for Cavipes....obvious

Straws ......well thiers is cause they look like strawberries

Indo's well that's cause they are indigo in color

Why not Viola's for Violascens wouldn't that be the obvious for that crab??? Just a thought!!!!

Those two abbreviations come from the crabs nick-name, and not their Genus Species name. Es are C. compressus, not really Ecuadorian, and PP's are C. clypeatus, Purple Pincher was just a nick-name assigned to them because of the color of their pincher. And what about C. Variabilis, Crazy Crabs? I'm not saying we should stray from the obvious, as we really haven't been. Just showing that not all names come from the obvious.

Despite the abbreviations for nicknames, I still think that we should go with viola...or even violets too...

We should go wth violets since their color is violet, and their full name is similar.Violas only goes with the name.

They are purple? Oops.... guess thats why nobody else has agreed with blues. I'm slightly colorblind, especially with blues and purples...

I don't see anything wrong with calling them Violascens... I think we should just go with that.
