Cleaning Tanks

Post by Guest » Mon Apr 17, 2006 6:28 pm

I was wondering what do you guys do to deep clean the tanks. I know I can't use soap so I wanted to know what is the best way to get the tanks clean.

Thanks! I thought I saw vinegar somewhere but I just wanted to confirm. I guess I can use the distill white vinegar?

OMG I didn't know you couldn't use soap. I just did. I used a small amount in my 20 gal after emptying for mites. I rinsed it really good, and left it outside for 24 hours after. Why are we not supposed to use soap?

Soap can contain harmful chemicals, such as perfumes or dyes. White vinegar kills any harmful bacteria, while at the same time neutralizing any odors. I just realized I sound like a commercial for Lysol.

Another thing that works well is the Mr. Clean magic erasers...there is no soap in them and those things will clean the nastiest, dirtiest mess ever!!!! They truly are magic!!
I would wipe down with a dry cloth afterwards and you are good to go...I think you could also use the vinegar before or after the magic eraser but it will take away any grime you have on the tank sides in one stroke!!

I dry it though before I let my hermit crabs in it.

I use some dechlor water on a papertowel to get out mites and such. It also works well to make the glass clear. :D

I used to use 409 or Windex to clean mine out
Never had troubles though. Now I just use water.
