What started this?

So.... who started the hermit crab association and this forum and when? How did the whole idea come about?

I'll try to answer as best as I can. I'm not one of the founding members, but I can try to be as accurate as possible.

The HCA first started out as a small Yahoo group. Just like this forum where we talk, and have disscusion of crab care issues. It was then updated to the PHP Forum hosting system.

Christa is the owner of http://hermit-crabs.com and she is the one who started the HCA. (right?) Laurie, and ripshaw are also some of the first members.

Anyone else know any history?

The Yahoo! group started in 2001 and the forum started in 2002, I believe. But like MacandHunter, I'm not one of the members who's been around since that time. In the memberlist, you'll see that there are some members who supposedly joined in 1969, which seems to be a glitch.

That is a bug, as there was not such thing called the internet then.
