I had a pump just like that one, michael.. Boy I hated that thing x_X It was noisy and didn't seem to do much of anything.. I don't know if yours is the same, but the trouble may be that it just doesn't provide enough airflow.

My pump is the Elite 799. And yes it is very noisy. I tried a number of tricks to quiet the thing down (for us humans; can hermit crabs hear that low screeech?), including hiding it under the tank (the MiniBow 2.5 includes a hollow base). My family can't stand the noise, but I ignore them. My excuse is taking good care of my crabs.

I agree too, the humidifier is a great solution to buying expensive equipment at a petstore. But it makes so much noise! [smilie=tearhair1.gif] And a silent pump (that's silent unlike the one I bought that's supposed to be ultra-silent) costs a lot of money ($15-$20).

What size pumps are you all using? I bought two today that are rated up to 2800cc/min. One was for my sons starter 10g and the other is for my snake 50g. I got a gallon jug on mine and appears to be working. But the pump is way to powerful for his jar it just bubbles up and starts pushing out water. Any suggestions for a smaller pump?

Well after going to a smaller pump and double checking for leaks I decided to scrap the humidifier. It didnt seem to work that well.

I have a question in regards to the tube placed in the tat.

Where is the best location? Near the floor or just peeking thru. Like does humidity rise like warmth?

don't place the airline near your humidity gague. That will cause it to read higher than it should. Don't stick the tube in your substrate, just let it stick in the air, or tape it (or get one of those suction cup for airlines) and stick it to the wall of your tank.

Glad some of you found it usefull

Thought I might add the humidifier isn't going to work properly if there is any leaks in the jar (like where the tubes go into the jar must be a tight fit) because the humid air (from the jar) is being forced out of the jar and up into the crabitat but if there is a leak it will escape out of there. The more powerfull the pump the better.

I'm having some issues with my hudmifier, maybe someone can help.
Originally I set it up in an old spagetti jar, and it worked great for a few weeks, barely had to mist and I'd rinse out and refresh the water about once a week. Then it started making a loud noise so took it apart and cleaned it, and even changed the stone, and its still loud. Well I noticed the top was starting to rust around the tubing so my husband made me a new one.
The humidity for the past week has been getting low over night (when I'm not able to mist). I just don't understand what I am doing wrong here. Why did it work perfectly the first 2 weeks and now it's like it's not doing anything?
Does the type/size of airstone matter? I've tried 2 different sizes.
I also wonder if the size tubing matters. The tube that goes from the jar to the tank is minipump tubing so should I get a wider one?
My third thing is the sponge. I hate sponges because they mold so I never used one and it still worked...does this part really matter?
Anyone that's tweaked theirs and seen a different, let me know what helps.

If it's very noisy, try sealing the holes on the lid of the jar with slicon caulk (available at most hardware stores and home inprovement stores) or aquarium sealent (get it at pet or fish supply stores). That should help keep the humidity from dropping, and may dampen the noise. I agree, these humidifier projects generate noise.

well it isn't the noise that i'm worried about, it's the humidity dropping.
I had aquarium sealant around the holes, everything sealed up real good.
Ive tried a couple of different size airstones as well with no changes

Tonight I remade a whole new one with a plastic jar and wide pump tubing and the humidity has dropped a little bit so I am serously doubting this is going to work. Hmmm....
I'm not sure what else to do.

I think I'm going to do this. But I don't have any extra airpump tubing right now, I gave my last extra few feet away...

however, I do have a question - how often does this generally need to be refilled? the wimpy little bubble pool I've got going now is refilled daily, it goes so fast, so I am assuming it's more like a few days?

I had mine on for 3 days continuously and it had maybe gone down a 1/3. Not often at all. And btw, that was way too long. My humidity was like 100%. Watch it.

It depends on the output of your pump - the more air it generates, the more humidity it makes, the more water it uses. Use a pump the size of your tank for best results (ex. for a 10 gallon, use a pump rated for 10 gallons).
