How Long Can They Hold Their Breath?

Post by Hermit_of_Hermit_Crabs » Mon May 22, 2006 1:48 am

I'd rather just play it safe and not find out. I have heard horror stories of people coming home and one of their hermies had drowned. I certainly don't want that happening to me or anyone else.

Mormegil wrote: I seriously doubt that. I assume they breath like fish, which is to extract dissolved elemental oxygen from the water. Otherwise, fish wouldn't suffocate in deoxygenated water.
Not be snippy, but thats what I said. They "breath" the oxygen out of the water molecule (which is two hydrogen atoms and an oxygen atom.) And I feel that you seriously disrespected what i said by saying "I seriously doubt that" and then going on to say what I just said in a different manner. There are more tactful ways to say that in your opinion or that there is scientific proof that I am wrong. :?

I'd have to agree with Narnar. You haven't made any qualitative differentiation in the original explanation that merits phrases such as, "for simplicity's sake", and the profoundly embarassing use of the royal subjective ("we'll first talk about"). You are informative. And I have been edited for my original comment. Apologies to moderators.

Thanks, I like the way you disagreed better this time. :) I was just trying to give a simple little explanation with my water/oxygen thing.

Thanks for your more indepth explanation.

Thank you for all the replies. I certainly will not test how long my crabs stay under so no worries. Their water bowls are filled with sponges and stones. They do not go in the water much , only dip their feet or walk along the side.

Oi! Mormegil is right on this one. Crabs aren't electrolysis plants, they don't have 9V battery stuck to their gills and sucking oxygen off the anode and farting hydrogen gas collecting on the cathode,(sorry for the crude explaination, the image of hermit crabs using electrolysis so funny  ). Sorry Nas, but the actual process is a lot closer to Mormegil than your explaination (which is a lot different).

I don't think any apology is necessary here, as Mormegil made a more accurate scientific explaination.

Accuracy doesn't excuse my tone.
