These are the directions for packing hermits to be shipped... you can also find this to the right under Crab Care FAQ under Shipping Crabs.

I recently shipped to Staws to my friend Hermie Girl (OH to KY) and they arrived just fine. Yours is a longer drive for them so I would just make sure to follow the directions perfectly.

is it illgal to ship live animals...casue i really dont wanna do anything that is against the law
EDIT: sorry i did not read the last part...i guess i have to go buy some stuff now

ok lemme make usre i got this straight...once i have prepared them...then i give em to the ups guy (i can use ups rite ? (not usps))

and then i sign for them the next day in arizona..correct?

REEDIT:

Honestly you are probably better off using USPS. UPS tends to be rather rough when it comes to shipping there boxes, I have gotten several packages from them dented and ripped. The only way I would suggest you use UPS is if you mark all over the box HANDLE WITH CARE-FRAGILE-GLASS. Also I think the post office might be a bit cheaper, but don't quote me on that. Good luck.

If you pack them up real good like the instructions say they shouldn't be bothered by the process... but it may be a good idea to mark it fragile so they are extra careful.

Yes, take it to the post office... mail it and make sure someone is waiting to receive them so they don't sit in the hot sun at the door.

I used USPS the time I sent them.

Maybe we could do that hermit crab train thing for you? Where people here drive to meet other members, they hand over the crabs and their living establishment at the time and then they will make it to you in Phoenix!

Perhaps we could travel from Georgia, to Alabama, to Mississippi, to Louisiana, to Texas, New Mexico and finally to Arizona.

It might take them a while to get to you but I can imagine it will be much safter than shipping them.

If they came thru CO, I could help but thats a bit far out of the shortest trip.

EDIT: If you do chose to ship them I have had some shipped to me USPS Overnight and they do great. Minehave come in those ziplock tuperware things. There are holes cut in the top for airflow and the hermit crab is packed in Moist EE or Forest bedding. Then the tuper ware is packed in peanuts or paper to keep it in place. Then there have been a couple holes poked in the actual box for airflow.

If you are going from GA to AZ you wont have to fill out any papaer work, just say the contents is "fragile" and they will stamp your box with fragile.

The crab that was shipped in this way, to me, came from TX. Ive had him for 2 years now...its been the safest way that I have had a crab shipped to me. I think the trick is limiting their mobility, but still allowing them to move a bit, providing humidity, water, and food...I think the forest bedding in a tuper ware is the best way to do that b/c they can eat and drink from the forest bedding while it keeps them humid...and they love to dig in it anyways so its a good think to "pack" them in. Also keeping the tuperware stable/not shifting around in the box is very imortant.

ok so i do the cocunut fiber stuff in a cool whip container...(should the crabs be like buried in the cocofiber, like shuldi pack them in the middle layer of the fiber?

and styrofoam peanuts or shreded paper keep the cool whip container from movin around....(will the styrofoam peanuts let air into the cool whi container?)

and of course poke holes in both of em, thoug the box holes not visilby placed all over the box to arouse (sp?) suspicion

hmm well i realy have my doubts about the US postal srevice..but i guess if thats what every1 is reccomending...then i shall go with that

so things to buy:
cool whip
a box to fit in the cool whip in
coco fiber brick
anytihng else

i have an unlimited amout of shredded white paper btw

and i really am intent on shipping them...i just feel more secure that way
(not to offend you NarnAR)

thanks

Ok when I had crabs shipped to me there were no holes poked in the box and they did fine, and I am also thinking the post office might become suspicious if there are any holes in the box at all. Also there is always the chance that any small holes in the box could become bigger holes if the box is handled improperly. I think the moist coco-fiber and dampened paper should be sufficient along with the holes in cool whip container.

yes..i doubt that crabs need anymore air than they have inside of teh box....for 1 day anyway

well then i guess i just get a bunch of shredded paper and hope that they dont affixiate

well i gotta go buy some stuff tehn

ohh, and how are the crabs delivered? do they just get left infront of the door if i use USPS? or does some1 have to sign for them..shuld i make some1 sign for them? im afraid to do that, becasue if i miss em thats like another day in the box for them (i shuldnt miss em though...ill be home before mail time...

When I got mine I had to sign for them, but that is what the person who sent them to me chose to have them signed for. Which is good basically because let's say there is no one home when they are delivered, and they leave the box at the front door. Someone walking by could walk off with your box and you would never know they were delivered. Also if they should deliver the box to the wrong address they can then trace who got the package.
