Factors that influence color

Post by Guest » Thu Jul 13, 2006 1:04 pm

I was just curious as to whether or not it has really been discovered exactly what determines a crab's color (especially after molting).

All of my pp's are very dark in color, my straw Happy Hal is bright red, and my favorite ruggie Magenta is pink. But crabs that have not molted with me seem to be more dull colors.

Here is what I'm assuming have an influence on their color:
Diet
Enviroment
Health
Activeness

I just wasn't sure if there was a definite answer to this or not

Diet is def. a factor in what color they are after they molt.

I wonder if sun light has anything to do with it? Does a crab who lives in the sun get a healither looking color then a crab that lives in shade?
Crabbing since 7/4/04 - 10 years!

Well, my PP was a reddish color when i got him. I feed him commercial food for about 2-3 weeks and then switched to NarNar's bluegreen. He just molted and the exo is turning out to be a beautiful shade of purple--the same color as his pincer.

Tannin gives hermit crabs color. It is in wood, grapes, and raisins.
