why would you pour water on your hermies!?

Anyway, does he smell really bad?

Do you haev a thermometer and hygrometer? If not, you need to. They need to be at around 80 degrees F, and 80% humidity.

Stop giving your hermies showers, i doubt they enjoy them as much as I do :P

Hi,

Just a couple of things...you said he was out of his shell, then "still out, but in a different location". So you mean he's running around without his shell correct?

First, check his shell...if there is a little pink crab WAY in the back of the shell, your crab has molted. If nothing is there...you're crab is going naked.

Second...is there a VERY strong "dead fish" odor? If so, your crab is very likely deceased. :( If not...try this: (and you will have to touch him)

Gently rinse any sand off of him using dechlorinated water. Then put him and his shell into a glass cup (in the tank). Hopefully he'll re-shell himself. If you're afraid of getting pinched you could try using a plastic spoon (never use metal), but be gentle.

If he doesn't re-shell himself, but he's still alive you'll have to try gently "tucking" his abdomen (the "icky" looking part) back into his shell and then let him be. He's going to be VERY stressed out if this works.

Either way....cut and paste the template I posted below, and repost it for us. It'll help us identify anything in your setup that might have contributed to your crab going naked.

Hang in there! :)

1. Substrate used?

2. Humidity % level in crabitat?

3. Temperature of substrate in crabitat?

4. Temperature of crabitat?

5. Location of gauges?

6. What is your heat source?

7. Types of water available?

8. Dechlorinator used?

9. What do you feed?

10. How long have you had the crab in question?

11. Do you know the species?

12. Do you bath them, if so how often and with what?

13. What type of housing are they in? Tank? Plastic box?

14. What size is your tank?

15. How many crabs are in the tank? What size are they?

16. How deep is the substrate?

17. If you take your hermies out daily to exercise, do you mist their gill area first?

18. Has there been any cleaners, paints, perfumes, air fresheners, candles, or smoking near the crabitat?

19. How often do you clean/sterilize and how?

20. Any unusual odors?

21. Do you use sponges? Are they rinsed daily with dechlor water? Are they exchanged every 2 days for a sterile one?

22. Do you feed fresh food? When do you remove it?

23. Are your hands clean before handling?

24. Has there been anything new added to your crabitat recently?

Don't feel bad, neither did most of us when we started. Therin lies the problem! ;) Pet shops promote them as low care/low maintenance pets...and they are, sort of. You just need to have a setup in place that supports the conditions they need (and that's what takes time & patience). :)

You have definitely come to the right place, as there are "crabbers" here of all levels of experience. And FROM all over too!

Let us know if you've got any specific concerns or questions, and we'll be glad to help! I hope you're not feeling too overwhelmed.

Thank you!
It helps...
I'm starting to like them though,
I actually let the on that's still in his shell
Walk on my hand yesterday... They sure tickle!
But trust me for me that's a large step...
