Straws in Australia..??

Post by Guest » Thu Jan 18, 2007 4:03 am

Ok, sorry if this post is meant for another area, I wasnt sure where to go.

I visited our pet shop today in Melbourne and they had a new bunch of nice little critters. However, 2 of them were bright red, as red as those in some of your guys pics..!! What sort would this be as I was under the impression that here in Oz all we get are the Crazies..??

Thanks 8)

if my info is correct, straws used to be sold in australia until recently, when they stopped because they were endagered or something...since i have never heard of any species in australia besides crazy crabs and straws, i think you have found some straws, lucky you!

I would guess that they are Straws. Where's Troppo and the other Australian's when ya need 'em. Hehe...

Someone from Australia should see this post soon and help ya out.

Hmmm...after a bit of research I thought I would include my findings here for anyone who is interested :D

"The Australian land hermit crab (Coenobita variabilis) is one of two terrestrial hermit crab species native to Australia and is found in northern parts of Australia including northern Western Australia, Northern Territory and northern Queensland. The other terrestrial species is the strawberry land hermit crab (C. perlatus) which is reportedly restricted to the islands and coral cays of the Great Barrier Reef, north-eastern Australia."

I guess they are here in Oz...!!!

I remember once Troppo saying that the Straws were very very expensive when they were available to buy...

Lol, how come I always find these posts when it's too late?

Yes there's Straws around on the islands, but have heard that they weren't being sold anymore until the wild numbers recover.

Anyway, Crabidity you saw Straws???? Maybe the wild numbers are starting to recover and they're coming back into pet-stores,yay!
Were they bright red with white spots over them? And how much were they selling for?

Saw one about 2 weeks ago at my local pet shop. They wanted $39.95 for it. Quite a decent size though.

Holy Mac!!!

So it is true, Straws are around!
Wish they'd hurry up and get some in the pet stores up in Queensland :P .

Oh a question for people that own Straws. Do they have to have a same species buddy?

OMG, and I thought $10.99 was a little high for a large Straw  .

I believe they do better with the same kind mate. How ever many of us have 1 of a kind due to availability and or death of a mate.

Australia has banned the export of crazy crabs and Straws to the States.
