Last winter I experimented with a waterbed heater with moderate success. However it must be monitored fairly closely even with the temperature guage that is attached to it.
When we moved to the new house I actually put the tank right next to a vent and haven't had any problems this year thankfully, but I also use a sunglo during the day.
the waterbed heater trials may be in the archives here

I have a rather powerful 125 watt brood lamp (the kind farmers use for warming chicks and piglets) sitting on top of the screen lid of my 75g tank. The rest of the screen is covered in vinyl to keep the humidity in. I also have it hooked to a thermostat; I wouldn't recommend using such high wattage without one. It's kept the crabitat temp around 75-80 degrees, with the house temp being 64 degrees. One of the Straws likes to sit directly under the lamp, which alarmed me at first, but so far, so good. I'm sure they bask in the sun in the wild.
I did the exact same thing in both of my tanks. I think the only thing I'll change for the summer is to use only one moon-glo instead of two, and possibly turn off the UTH.Ryanstein wrote:I use a night-glo at night, and sun-glo during the day, with an UTH. The UTH keeps the ground warm, while the light keeps my second levels warm.
