Stuck on the lid

Post by Guest » Wed Jan 02, 2008 6:41 pm

I heard some strange noise coming from the crabitat and look what I found:

Harry was walking the lid - back & forth for a good hour - actually more since I left him there.

Do I gently take him off or let him continue to walk the lid? I m afraid to turn off the light as he might get startled and fall.

Mine walk on the lid a lot as well. The sand is there to break their fall and they come up unharmed if/when they do fall.

I'd let him stay up there for a bit more and we will come down on his own soon. If not though, I am sometimes able to get mine down. The grip on with their legs and I can sometimes gently put the legs in a position so they no longer have the grip. :)

It's perfectly natural for your crabs to climb on the lid--mine do that also. I usually let them climb on it and they find their way down okay. If they got up there, they can usually get back down.

I wouldn't worry about pulling your hermit down.

LOL and Red and Lilac and Hercules and all my E's used to do that is the 20L! They can't do it anymore in the new 40B. I always thought it was so cute. My crabs would always go down sooner or later. Don't worry about scaring them with the light. It's probobly ten times less scary than a giant hand yanking them off!

I just posted a comment under a different heading about my guy doing that! I'm glad I read this thread so I'm not so afraid of it happening again!
Thanks :)

He did look like he was nervous - pacing back and forth. A couple of times it looked like he was going to fall, but he caught himself.

I know his shell is too big to get through the crack I have in the lid for air circulation & humidity control. But the poor guy looks so puzzled as to how to get down.

Sabastian does it all the time. He sometimes falls but my sister and I don't worry too much about it because his shell protects him.

Well, I gave in and helped him down. He let go of the top rather easily. He is now climbing the grape vine wood.

He must have been ready for a little help :)
Sometimes we have to follow our intuition I think.

Sometimes.

I was checking in on the babies before I went to bed last night and did a shell check on 3 of the 4 that aren't buried, but couldn't find Simon! I heard a little scratching and thought, "Oh great, now my most active crab is digging down and I won't see him for who knows how long." So I kept looking until my husband asked what the hold up was. I told him that I couldn't find Simon. His reply was: "Well, it's not like he could be anywhere but in the tank, so don't worry about it."
Then I finally found him upside down, crawling along the lid toward the venting hole (which he could easily fit through!) What a naughty boy. [smilie=lecturef.gif] I had to tell his mommy on him. I helped him down and sealed up the hole just incase.

When I first got my E, Sebastian, he climbed to the lid (I have no idea how) and I watched him for like three hours to see if he'd come down. I went to the bathroom, came back and he was in the food bowl munchin' away. Silly crabs
