I have a straw molter...

Post by Guest » Thu Feb 14, 2008 1:22 am

So i looked thru the bottom of my aquarium and noticed a very light pink straw. There was the whole exo next to him, so i know he at least shedded it off. I hope he makes it thru. i had lost my very 1st straw due 2 a very bad molt.

Has he started to eat the exo yet? That is what always worries me with my straws. But, as soon as they start to eat the exo, I breath a sigh of relief, because it is a very good sign that they have a successful molt. :)

As far as I know he only ate a little part of the exo that was the last to come off of him... Can anyone tell me what to expect with Straw molts and how long a large usually takes to finish molting? I really want my baby yo pull thru being that I just lost my favorite hermie the beginning of the week. My very 1st Straw i had died to a molt that went very wrong and didnt even completely shed his exo, only 3 legs but my crabitat is in way better conditions than before also. I checked thru the glass and my straw is still light pink but I can see his legs wiggling. 1 part of 1 of his walking legs looks a little purple. Is this normal or it could possibly be from the substrate. Ne help would be greatly appreciated. For anyone who is interested... This is my friendly straw that is currently molting....

I'm sorry to hear that your crabs are giving you such a hard time.
I think that straw is lovely so I hope he has a successful molt.

Stay strong.

An Update.....

Post by Guest » Sun Feb 17, 2008 11:43 am

I found alot of my crabs digging around the area my molting straw was so being that he was very close to the surface and I didn't wanna take any chances (Having a horrible enough week already) - I took the straw and his exo and moved him to iso... If anyone is experienced with molting straws I took a few images while I was putting him in his ISO and he peeked out a few times.... Hope that is a good sign. Please let me know any kind of info that you think would help. I have him in a warm, dark place....

How long does everyone ISO their straws? He didn't eat all of his exo yet, but ate part of a strawberry... He seems to be going a long well....

Well, I cannot fully answer your straw-specific molt questions since I've never had one molt successfully with me (I've got an Indo which, unlike PP's, seems to molt fast and gain color fast) but the fact that the crab is peeking is a good sign. Hopefully the crabby will make a full recovery.

Good luck! 8)

I am experiencing my 1st straw molt right now too. I had some new things in the tank that molded badly in days, so I had to do a cleaning. During this cleaning I discovered he had molted and had not yet begun eating exo. All this was 3 days ago. I also ISOed him and his exo. He has it mostly eaten already. The color is what also concerned me. Bertie, my straw, was a darker pink than yours looked, but also had the areas of purple. Today his color has changed to a dark red. So I think they are probably fine. Mine too peeked out at me. Keep me updated on how things are going!
