DNA testing?

Megs' skeptic nature aside... FWIW, Felix in Indonesia is Mokulele Hawaii.

Out of pure curiosity, I know that many people have spoken to the owner, but has anyone actually seen photos of his place, or even better, been there in person? I worked in cat rescue, and because of it I tend to be very skeptical of people who sound too good to be true. Please don't take it the wrong way - I'm not trying to offend him or anyone who knows him, but I am just curious.

I have seen a few pics. You are right though - there are some places that sound awesome and are terrible. From what I have seen, I have no reason to suspect this is one of those scenarios. Otherwise I would not have purchased. I have gotten crabs from some places I was disappointed to then have described to me in the past and really do not want to play that game any more. If I can't feel good about where I get them, I don't want them.

PCR is getting cheaper every day. (though I have no idea what exactly he did have tested.) It can be done however, not cheap (cheaper is not automatically cheap), but doable.

On the outset, it looks similar to cavipes on Tonycoenobita's website:

There's also a Japanese-language webpage that identifies a similar looking crab as cavipes; scroll all the way down to the bottom of the page - the page language is in Japanese (Kana/Kanji language support) but the scientific name is in romanji/English:

But there could be more than meets the eye (or the video settings on my monitor)...oh well.

That thing is no cavipes.

Here is a pic of my juvenile purpureus for comparison

Image
Coenobita brunneus is brown, to brownish green, has very large eyes similar to Purpureus and a left outter leg favors the same.

I am not so sure I agree - the pincers are more symmetrical. I don't think it is a cavipe. But a singe picture makes it difficult to be definitive.

Well, regardless of what we think of the physiolgy/anatomy involved, in the long run if it is indeed a new species confirmed by the scientific community and Mokulele Hawai'i (Felix) happened to co-name it, that's pretty cool…in fact, that would rock, hard! 8) If not, oh well...

Frankly, though, I do agree to an extent with Mac's response to the initial posts of this thread (prior to Mac's posting). Perhaps the snack chip metaphor/simile and bare-boned enthusiasm was a bit too much…I wouldn’t necessarily try to get all too caught up “poppin’ them in like chipsâ€

A) crabs need groups of conspecifics so it is appropriate to want several of a particular species, this would necessitate buying or adopting them.

B) What is the harm in expanding one's collection if one has the resources to care for them. I know - collecting the animals could be seen as a harm - but anyone here making accusations along those lines would be pot calling kettle black no?

C) Methinks some folks took this thread waaaay too seriously.
I don't know why no one else questions this or the priorities that we have today.
I don't think no one questions it - I think folks were just having a little fun. A brief exchange on a forum should never be construed as the totality of one's opinion on something as complex a subject as pet ownership, new species, ethics etc. Just because some folks did not question it here, doesn't mean they don't or haven't.

Yes I had contacted them and I am still waiting for a reply.

No, because I don't buy a species a hour, day week, or month after I first find out about them. Like I said, I don't feel like we have enough information about this development yet and I don't think it's right to buy buy buy at this time. And I haven't bought any species of crab in years just FYI.
Methinks some folks took this thread waaaay too seriously.
It's an important event when a new species is found, if this is a new species. I do trust Felix's judgement, but don't know anything about the shop yet. If you don't like this thread, please you do not have to post in it.
Crabbing since 7/4/04 - 10 years!
I'm not asking salvation from you - I'm just asking to be safe for a while
make it easy - make this easy
it's not as heavy as it seems
