Guide to Nutrition Update - Favorite Foods

Post by Kilimanjaro » Wed Aug 04, 2010 11:27 pm

Hi, everyone!

I'm looking to update the favorite foods section of the Guide to Hermit Crab Nutrition.

All I ask is for you to post some of the foods for which your crabs go crazy and aren't already on this list:

Bloodworms (freeze-dried)
Blueberries
Chicken bone marrow
Coconut
Cuttlebone
Earthworm castings
Krill (frozen & thawed or freeze-dried)
Mango
Millet
Oak leaves
Papaya
Peanut butter (organic)
Persimmon
Pineapple
Popcorn (no butter or salt)
Rolled oats
Shrimp (whole)
Wheat germ

Thanks for taking the time to help me update the list, everyone! Your input is genuinely appreciated. :glasses2:

puffed rice, millet and oats
sunflower chip paste ( ground up sunflower chips made into a paste with dechlorinated salt water )
raw organic honey
left over chicken on bones from fried chicken ( given incredibly sparingly )
lobster meat
ground lobster exo

my bunch are pretty weird, then. most of those foods are met with lukewarm appetites.

the one time i tried a microwaved broad bean, it was dragged away and all i could find was the husk and a few remnants. i think it would bear looking into.

ground pork - i microwaved several meatballs and froze them for later use. i can never find them

mysis shrimp - still a shrimp, but much better received than regular shrimp. i use the freeze-dried kind.

tomatoes have a pretty good track record - most of the time they've been dragged some distance.

My crabs love copper sulphate and iodine.

(Dear new crab owners, this is a joke. Please don't kill your crabs because of it)

Mine go nuts for corn.

Oh yes, eggs (and egg shells) and bloodworms are fav's in my tanks too . . .

Golden raisins! Mine ignore regular raisins and are not very interested in dried blueberries, goji or cranberries, but they LOVE those golden yellow grapes . . .

Tomatoes - for mine, sweet cherry tomatoes where the biggest hit ever - and also hot peppers. They do loves them some spicy food. :)

(I'm glad you already added freeze-dried krill. I tried that for the first time this week and omg the carnage the next morning! Little krill legs everywhere....)

My crabbies LOVE corn too!...I get these organic freeze dried sweet corn kernels at the grocery store and they go crazy every time I feed them.

Also, fresh picked rose petals! (My crabs won't even touch dried flowers)

Mine are just the opposite. though they will nibble on fresh flowers, they seem to prefer dried.
