I just wanted to add that in Florida or at least here where I live, Home Depot only sells sakrete Brand Play sand and as I have discovered by all the post here this is NOT the right sand to use. I checked online at my local Lowes to see if they have the Quikrete brand Premium Play sand and they do so am heading there this afternoon. I wanted to provide a link of a pic of the bag I am getting Make sure without a doubt this is the right stuff and also if it is this will give a visual to others here of what to look for in the stores. I also read while looking for this that it is a mixture of dirt and sand maybe this is the difference why its safer than the other sands and it does say it is washed and screened also.

If you ask for the one for making cement instead of for sand boxes you will find in less expensive. Home depot might have it if you ask for it as sand for mixing cement too.
our bags look different here but they do not say for sand boxes and that might be why.

Kriss,
I am in Tampa, we went back to home depot here and all they have is the Sakrete Play Sand it is in the area where all the cement mixes are etc and we even asked and they said they dont carry the quikrete kind. This is frustrating. Maybe differnt areas carry differnt brands I dont know thats why i put the link up

Bluewhite - Have you tried other home depots? and are you sure they knew what they were talking about? Sometimes people aren't too bright
If you had no choice you could do 100% EE, I know some people here have had great luck with it.

wow who knew!
Wow who knew this would be such a popular subject. I still have yet to write down the bag I purchased but it said on it for animals. It was moist, sand castle packable. and my hermy's seem to be doing fine in it. I have two buried deep right now. One is next to the glass so you can see his tunnel and its holding up nicely. I've glanced threw alot of older posts and don't believe they have gone into such detail in regards substrate. Maybe this might be recommended as a sticky for new Hermit Crab owners?

Sands of Home Depot.
Ok. Went to Home Depot over the weekend with a pen and paper and this is what they had. Two brands, Quikrete, & Kolor Scape. The two best choices by recommendation were the cheapest. I'd add the pictures but not quite familiar with how to do that yet.
