His eyes are gone?!

Post by scyllarus » Sun May 22, 2011 11:02 pm

So, okay, I swear there's something wrong with me because I can't seem to keep my PPs healthy and happy. This time around it's James, who just came up from a molt missing most of his eyes. He has the wider part, but the little eyes themselves are tiny little dots at the very ends.

I know they can regenerate eyes, but he's blind now (he doesn't respond to shadow) and I'm afraid that next molt he'll be entirely eyeless. :C Anyone have this happen? I know we had one crabbie that was originally blind and I think her eyes degenerated, but James was normal until now.

I'm sorry to hear that you're having trouble with your PPs. I have a PP, Favre, who came up from a molt with one of his eyes very very small but it was very cloudy before his molt (purchased him that way). He molted more frequently then what I would consider normal for his size at the time and now, several molts later, he has almost completely regrown that eye. [smilie=fingerscrossed.jpg] that it works out the same way for your crabbie. :D

Scroll down on this thread: Pics of the one eyed crab over the years for a few pics of Favre's eye after molts. JediMasterThrash also has some great pics of a crab in the original post.

I don't remember anything being terribly wrong with his eyes before the molt, but I don't know. I'm just telling myself that it's good that he's a pet hermit crab - no worries about running from seagulls.

He's a pretty small crab, so hopefully he'll molt soon and get better.

Wolf has a crab that she purchased blind and whose eyes seemed to shrink after molting. Here's her thread:

I've got one as well that has "frog eyes", and his seem to be getting worse with every molt as well. It's like the skin is growing over where his eyes are and the shiny black part is slowly disappearing. I keep trying to get pictures but while he's somewhat okay with me, he's terrified of the camera.

I have another that came up with one "raisin" eye - I think part of his exo got stuck and so it didn't molt with the rest of him and is now all shrively. That one I'm not too worried about, but it'll be another half year before he molts again to find out!
