Hold them! Ha! Try and catch them! You know those super-fast tunnel spiders? Imagine those at warp-speed. They are insanely zippy quick.

Re: Got Fiddler Crabs - with pics! (7/12 Eggs!)
Sadly they hatch out the same as hermit crabs and need full salt and all that fun stuff to be able to survive. (Check out wolfnipplechip's thread about her hermit with eggs to find out all that's involved.) I think that fid's are even more of a pain though since the babies stay in the estuary (brackish) then go out to sea for a bit, and then come back to the brackish again. I don't think anyone had managed, but I guess I should probably look into it!Kristy wrote:wow eggs! your gonna have a million of them little buggers soon! lol congrats!

I feel so bad! Both crabbies are good mamas and sit there ruffling the eggs in the water and cleaning them The eggs are getting darker by the day as well.
It's so interesting how they carry them, too.
I also realized that they were gravid when I bought them. So still not a sign that I'm doing everything right, but I can hope!

Re: Got Fiddler Crabs - with pics! (7/12 Eggs!)
Thanks! I just try to observe my pets as much as possible and then make small changes to try and make things better for them. I'm very lucky (and yet extremely cursed) in that I'm home all the time to be able to do that.
One of the males molted for sure. He looks like a freshly painted hot rod, and his old claw is floating around the tank for good measure as well. (Scared the heck outta me because I saw one of the gals munching away on it before I saw him!)
His interpretive dance of...... an elephant's first visit to the Arc d'Triump.... (When they do that claw thing it's like that old Monty Python skit of Wuthering Heights done in semaphore, only without the subtitles.)
You can almost hear the other male going "Heeeeey Pretty Ladies!"
And the ladies, they was listening!
So much so that the boys got into a claw-shove match! That one surprised me as I've never seen them interacting before. But they are getting larger so I imagine that is normal. We're still saving up to order the supplies to move these guys around, and it can't happen soon enough. My camera is slow, but the colorful one was shoving the other one right down the ramp.
And if you ever want a plant that will grow in a salty crab tank, look no farther than a flowering quince.... Those things are weeds!
