Atlantic Ocean Hermit Crab?

Post by Jackolope » Wed Nov 02, 2011 4:45 pm

Found this little guy on the beach. He is a marine crab and about the size of a dime. I honestly didn't think these guys could live off the coast of NJ. I let him go though, no need to remove him from a natural habitat.

What a cutie! I love his shell. Cool find. Marine hermies live pretty much everywhere. I even found a giant one in Alaska. :)

I think I have a picture somewhere. *digs around photobucket albums*

I rescued him from dessication. :D He was easily a "jumbo" size. And he's actually called an "Alaska Hermit Crab" I looked him up.

And the small ones litter the beaches in Alaska.

They only grow to about the size of a nickel. :) Cute little guys.

WOW, I couldn't imagine finding one in the wild. I live close to the coast of WA and we go there all the time, and never seen one. I will have to look much closer next time! :P

That is the prettiest shell I have ever seen! Do anyone sell those?! If so, what are they called?

I found this one on the beach in NJ, I don't think anyone sells this particular species but marine crabs are available as aquarium pets. I don't know the specifics, I only have land herms. also i like your avatar :D
