Re: Anyone ordering LHC crabs for 12/14/11?
There are varying opinions on how to treat for mites. I know that LHC recommends double strength salt water. I only use regular strength because I don't like to use a strength of salt water that they don't encounter in the wild. I'm just not sure if it could be harmful, but that's just what I do. Either way, they should be rinsed in dechlorinated water. I also only bath them once a day - less stressful for both me and the crabs. One thing I do make sure to do is watch carefully for shell changes. I have found mites in a recently vacated shell, as have others.
If it were me, I'd give them a bath when you get them, then put them in the sterile tank and leave them alone for a day so they can get adjusted and not be pulled back out in a few hours for a bath.

I just looked up how long the flight is from Jakarta, Indonesia to NY JFK... 21 hours!
Talk about some jet lagged crabbies.
I asked how they are doing and she told me they are hanging in there.

personally i'm not going to put them straight into a sterile environment. of course its up to you how you want to treat them. But they just arrived this weekend, than taking another flight. these guys need to destress. and in my opinion giving them the best conditions possible to destress is more important than treating for mites asap. per the email from LHC she said not to treat for mites asap and not even bath them asap until they have had time to destress. i still may bath them and will probably go get some deeper water containers so they can bath themselves but that will be about it for at least a week.

That is what I'm doing, letting them destress first.

Where are you ordering them from? I had seen a website once upon a time but was a while ago.hashiriya wrote:i'm going to do the same, Zoey. i'm just going to put them in the main, and get the hypoaspis miles - i already have a fungus gnat problem i need to resolve.

i used this link as a reference:Zoeythelost wrote: Where are you ordering them from? I had seen a website once upon a time but was a while ago.
http://crabstreetjournal.com/xoops/modu ... storyid=11
the store that is referenced in the page doesn't seem to exist anymore though.
i've found this site that seems to have good customer service from some board posts:
http://www.biconet.com/biocontrol/hypoaspis.html
here's another that sells the mites - http://store.evergreengrowers.com/prost ... etail?no=1
i'm going to just do a little more research into the sites though to ensure that they've had "good" shipments on the record.

Re: Anyone ordering LHC crabs for 12/14/11?
So they should be dipped in saltwater and a dechlorinated freshwater rinse the day they arrive? Or should you wait a day to let them settle in? I haven't ordered any but I'm considering it in the future, since I'm pretty positive I'll ever find anyone within a four hour drive of where I live is going to be re homing blueberries or even PP's that have the coloration of blueberries (which of course could change with a molt).

Re: Anyone ordering LHC crabs for 12/14/11?
Invert Mom,
we've been receiving emails from LHC indicating that she's just gotten them in over the past weekend, and so, they've not had time to destress. normally, from what i understand, they only ship crabs that have had time to destress, and even molt in her care. since they haven't had that opportunity this go around, some of us feel that we'd rather just not risk their long term health to resolve a possible mite issue and just have them in a substrate where they can adequately and comfortable destress. but typically, she suggests that we ISO them for a week and give them a double strength salt water bath with a dechlor rinse for at least a week so that we know they are mite-free.
