which species... UPDATE, Violas or straws?

Post by Hermycrabitat21 » Thu May 10, 2012 9:05 pm

hey guys so my birthday is coming up on the 30th, and i thought that it would finally be time to order my exotic hermies!!
and i also have an extra tank, and it has already been fitted with florescent UVB light fixture. but one thing... i am completly indecisive, as to which ones to get. i know i want a Ruggie, that is #1. but i dont know what #2 should be, a blueberry, a viola, or a strawberry? i have no idea what to choose, but you can help me by telling me your favorites and why. hopfully it will spark a decision in me :)

It is always recommended to get a species buddy. I personally love the look of strawberry and blueberry

ya I would get a few Ruggies if you want those the most. Or a pair of straws is what I'm going for.

I know indos aren't on your list, but if you want to wait until they get them in stock, they are worth it! That are so gentle and full of personality. :)

Are ruggies the ones with the super giant claw? I think those would be awesome. But I'd actually choose the hardiest/strongest of the species. I just know I'd be so sad if they.... ya know....

Apparently Strawberries can handle being with any other hermit crab, that's what I've heard. Although strawberries are more of a responsibility, they're awesome!

A species buddy should be the first choice! Otherwise, I vote for Blues. They never seem to give anyone ever trouble. :)

Wow loads of responses!! I seem to be leaning more towards the blues. I'm possibly thinking about not doing ruggies because they look similar to the E's, and I really want something different. I would love a straw but not going to try them yet.
Do u know when they will be getting more indo's in?

I love both my straws & violas.

The straws are by far way more active, but my Violas are oh so sweet! They're very shy (I've only had them for a few weeks - got them from LHC) so far, but I'm sure they'll open up as they get more used to things.

Violas can be predatory, but as long as you feed like you should, there shouldn't be any problems along those lines.

Beware, though. If you order straws from them, they are likely to come much smaller than what you're expecting. I ordered smalls and got tinys and I know someone else who ordered mediums and got smalls in the same shipment as mine. Apparently at LHC they size them based off of what they have in stock and not a set guideline kind of thing (this is what I was told via email from their customer service).

thank you, that deffinitly puts things in a bit more perspective. i would like to start out with smalls so maybe i will order straws.

although the predatory thing would not be a problem in my tank, i only feed the most natural of foods, no comercial diets here. and they get alot of different foods. buts its so much better that way.
