Re: 29G Brackish -7/23 Mega Update! New Species, Redo, Pics,
The tank looks very nice!
I know what you mean about your furry friends scratching up the stand. My dog used to love to tear our basement door to pieces whenever we would go down there. And when he was a puppy he just loves ripping up carpet. I always told everyone thats why I didn't have nice things

Sorry about the marine hermit crabs, I know you did you best with caring for them!
The new pink crabs are very pretty! Never seen anything like it before
Love the video with the guppies, and I know I've said this a million times, but it makes me miss having them!

Those females are absolutely gorgeous I'm glad you scooped them up in time.. Poor males
The tank looks like a pool in the wild or something, but cleaner you did a good job
I'm really sorry about the MHC the babies were wonderful to watch.. If you find out what happened will you try one day in the future? (im only asking because they seemed to make you really happy )

Re: 29G Brackish -7/23 Mega Update! New Species, Redo, Pics,
Two of the males must have only been "mostly dead", as we looked again when we went back tonight for some more supplies and they were still kind of moving. One may end up being alright as it lost it's BP and was still perky and active. The other I'm not sure about. It's missing it's BP as well, and it let me lift it right out if the cup without struggling and lower it into the water.
I know I shouldn't be paying for them, but I just felt so bad for them. The one that I lowered down into the water had been grabbing my hand in fear, and as soon as it hit the water I could feel the poor thing relax. It was... nice, to know that at least he'll be comfortable even if he doesn't make it. He's still on the leaf below the filter where I put him, and he looks as calm as the others.

Re: 29G Brackish -7/23 Mega Update! New Species, Redo, Pics,
And uh.... I brought home another eight females.
We had an adoption I was very much looking forward to fall through at the last minute, and then one of my PPs who was attacked or had an accident while molting last week suddenly died on me completely unexpectedly about 15 minutes later. (I really thought he was going to be okay since he was getting stronger ) So when we stopped at the store to grab some bleach to take care of a massive ground hornet's nest and they had gotten in a shipment of some lovely ladies I was not in the right mental state to walk away from them knowing darn well what the scene would be like in just a couple of days. And my loving hubby, who I have come to realize, has absolutely no ability to say "no" when I'm upset even when we both know he probably should. (I really do love that man. )
So yeah, another eight pugilator fem fatales have been added to the tank. That should put the tank at:
2 male pugnax/minax (not sure on the species) - one huge, one teeny
2 male pugilators - both new, both that are missing their big claws, both average
11 puglilator females - all new, small and average
7 female pugnax/minux - 1 huge, 2 mediums, 4 smalls
And with that the tank is full and we bring home no more until we see how they do. The magic number for fids to be safe from their version of "PPS" seems to be three months. If they can pass that mark there's a great chance they will live a full life. Unfortunately most don't seem to, and I've read that is due to having been shipped and kept in non-salt water - they just can never recover. What it sounds like to a hermit person is that something happens and they can't molt or have a failure molting. Just wait and see now, I guess.

Re: 29G Brackish -7/23 Mega Update! New Species, Redo, Pics,
I never did get pictures of the girls - I just put them right into the tank.
Surprisingly there haven't been any deaths. I thought for sure some would succumb to their version of PPS quickly, but so far they've all been doing great.
I ended up getting two more. My husband has GOT to stop asking about if they have any while we're there. I'm not the type of person to walk away once I know that they're in trouble.
Female one:
They really are so small and they weigh nearly nothing!
Female 2:
The baby guppy on the leaf actually beached itself trying to go after the fid's legs. I guess she must of smelled yummy for some reason!
One of the first females from last summer. I love the speckles she developed!
And two more playing hermit crab.
And finally a feeding frenzy for betta pellets. 10 ladies in all!

The brown ones are either uca minax or uca pugnax (can't find a reliable way of differentiating the species online, I really should go to the library and look in a book already) and the orange/pink/lavender ones are uca pugilator.CrabbyMom33 wrote:I didn't realize there was so much variation in their color.
