Pictures of my crabitats (Successful Viola Breeding)

This area is dedicated to the pioneers who have captive bred crabs, and for those who wish to learn more or attempt it themselves. Also for inquiring about the gender of your crabs.

Curlz wrote: All noticed things points to viola. I don't believe in a hybrid theory.... as long as a conspecific is available there is no need for nature to take another sort. (But this is only my opinion!)
I'm not sure if I believe it either, but I have to admit to the possibility since we don't know how closely related they are. (Like with hyrbid finches.) DNA would be the only way to know for certain, and I simply don't know if the other hermit species have been tested and are on file to compare them to.

:) thx. To show you how tiny they are. (or how big Mrs. Z is ;) )
It is not easy to show their real size!

the tiny shells are empty. it is too risky to put the little hermit into the big tank. The two shells are one of the first bigger shells after they have climbed out of the water.

Curlz,

This is so amazing and gives inspiration to all of us. Great, great work.

I think someone reposted this on another forum earlier, and like I told that person, after reading earlier today about the passing of Crab Kate, this is just the sort of thing I really needed to read. I was so bummed out, but this truly is amazing. Keep it up.

I love the tanks! The babies are so adorable!

On the hybrid thing, I would love to see if I could look at the DNA. I am a bio major. Perhaps I could find a way to do a comparison. We have worked with DNA a couple of times in the lab, during my senior project maybe I could see if it's possible to do hermit research =)

Those little babies just take my breath away. I wonder how hard they can pinch lolz. Thank you for posting all of this info. It would be wonderful to see them grow and develop their personalities.

again: thx @ all.

@Skymall007: hm is there any way to get DNA und send it to you without loosing the DNA on the long way to USA?

But I have male and female violas, reggies, blueberries, pp and ecuadorian. So why should they be hybrid?
Even in nature there are no hybrid, are there? I do not have seen a picture. Some special colors sometimes. But with a look at the unique characteristics, they all can be sorted in the known species. But this is only my opinion.I am no biologist ;)

thank you. And I hope to see them grow and develop a loooooong time! :)

how long did the tiny crabs take to get out of the water and how did you see them? how old are they now?

Maybe some of them can cross breed but maybe have not had the chance in the wild.

I will talk to my marine Biology teacher and see if there are any tests I could possibly do. I think if stored in the right conditions it should be able to ship well. I will look up storing DNA and talk to my professors. If I could analyze their DNA I would be so excited! I would let everyone know the results right away. =) As soon as the school year starts I see what I can do. We start back at the end of this month =)

Curlz is a few days off.

To you really think it's possible to get DNA-tests of so tiny crabs? Curlz can barely hold their shells between her fingers, so small they are!
I guess if this test is possible, you have to wait until the mite are much bigger.

Hmm, or if she finds a dead one,.... Which none of us hopes!
5 Indos, 4 Violas, 1 Rugs, 1 E, 5 adult PPs and about 22 breeding's of PPs!
Some other breeding's also, which species is yet not confirmed.

I would love to hear more about the breeding process from mating to raising the hatchlings.

Edit: I'd also like to know what live plants you have and how you have them planted.

Hi @ all,

@kuza: I don't know if they will have a chance in the wild. At the moment they are my first try to breed them. We will see what will happen. First of all I will take care of them and try to give them a long lasting life in captivity.

@littleraindrop87: after 19-20 days the first larvae changed to glaucothoe. On day 25 the first ones showed interest to shells. On day 32 the first ones keep on their shells.
On day 41 the first little land hermit left the water. One day later the first one walked over the sand in the tank. From day 50 were sure that none of them turns back to water, they stayed on land. Preparing for their first molting ever.
The dates are nearly the same as Renae Brodie got in her studies about C. compressus (ecuadorian).

@JamesR: the complete documentation can be found here: https://docs.google.com/open?id=0Bxr0FH ... aUJ2cmhQQQ

Oh, I really don't know the english or american names of my live plants. I only can give you the latin names.
The live plants will be changed sometimes, because my hermits messed them up. And I have to take small ones, because the terrarium is not high enough for big plants. It's 23.6 inch. And 5.9 - 7.8 inch of it are ground.

Normally I use:

Ficus microcarpa
Chamaedorea elegans
Dracaena (different variants)
Bromeliaceae (different variants)
Grass (like Cyperus zumula)

some times I try: Orchidaceae. But it is too hot and high humidity for them.

@naalide: thy :)

@ Skymall007: yes, please ask and let me know. It would be very interesting for us, too.

I didn't mean to release your guys in to the wild, I meant in general, crabs may never have had the chance to cross-breed so we'll never know if it's possible unless we see it happen as pets.

I do not thing my hermits cross breed! They don't have to do, because I got female and male of every species. Except Indos. (I only got one female, unfortunately all alone)
They can't choose her male or female not as in nature under thousands of their species. But I got female and male that fits in size and species. Not a big choice, but no need to take another species to breed.

As far as I know there are no cross-breedings biologicall documented and / or accepted in nature. So I still do not belive in cross breeding or hybrid land hermit crabs.

but if there is a chance to check the DNA to identify the species, I will do it. There are labs here in Germany, but I don't know if the knew land hermit DNA to identify.

They can probably test your crabs you know too, then they would have the base DNA to test against.

Nice documentation of the process. I liked the videos. What kind of substrate do you have the plants in?
