Is This True About E's?

Post by Cassafrass1999 » Thu Sep 06, 2012 7:50 pm

I was reading my Hermit Crab's For Dummies book, and it said that if you don't have at least more than one E than the one all by itself will "slow down, get listless, refuse to eat, and eventually die". It also says you need to own at least three of them if you are going to own them at all. Is this true? When I got my E Sunny I didn't know she was an E for sure because I had never seen a real E before except for pictures. Please help!
I am a proud owner of five hermies named Leopard (PP), Ribbon (PP), Kremer (PP), Queenie (PP), and Sunny (E). I have been crabbing since 6/16/11, and have been loving and learning so much about them ever since! My family and I also own a husky, a cat, and a bunch of freshwater fish.

No, they might not die, but they will be a lot happier with a species buddy. :)

It is good to have a species buddy. Do you have room in your tank? I can't remember what size tank you have, but I know you are in the same general area that I am and I can help you find another E.

I definately have a full cage right now. I have a Giant Little Crab Shack, and have five in there right now.

Yes, you are at capacity, or a bit beyond. Can you take advantage of any of the $1 per gallon sales and get a 20 or 29?

Probably not right now. I am saving my money for a upcoming concert. Maybe if I start saving up my money after the concert... But I am just going to use my GLCS for now I think. :)

I currently have only one E and have had her alone for a few months now. She is just as active as ever, but even so, I still have my local pet store lady getting in a couple more for me.

Cass, I've successfully housed Es in a Rubbermaid :) you can get a huge Rubbermaid for really cheap. I got a 50 ish gallon rubbermaid for 12 bucks i think? I had a lamp and heat pad on mine, with moss. Just deck it out like you would a normal tank, with sad and EE, water dishes, food dishes, hideys, branches, and you can either buy a screen lid, or a glass lid, or get crafty and make one with some adult supervision :) you'll need a way to let light in through the lid.
I have heard about Es getting sickly after being alone for awhile, I wouldn't know from personal experience, but at least one species buddy is best :) and with the setup you have, I'd really wait to upgrade before getting one.

Thank you both for the comments. :) I hope to hopefully get a tank as soon as I can

The Hermit Crabs for Dummies book is strewn with misinformation. I advise looking into a different book or none at all.

But I do recommend getting a species buddy. They could get depressed if not. Plus it's just nice of them to have a partner in crime :)
I have 8 crabs available for adoption, please PM me if interested.

The hermit crab for dummies book is great, actually! :D it has a couple issues, but nothing big. And I believe the HCA helped with it too :)
