Alaska Hermit food store open for business! SALE 1/17/2014
Re: Alaska Hermit food store open for business! :D
@ moose poop
I had to translate it. in Germany it is "Elch Kot"
I have got a question about the carapace: (maybe a stupid one)
are they dry without flesh inside?
here in Germany I can buy some crabs with carapace in fish shops. But they are fresh and have to be feed directly.
hmm, I think I have to check the shipping details from Alaska to Germany

Since I didn't know what a carapace was, I googled it.
The result was:
In crustaceans, the carapace is a part of the exoskeleton that covers the cephalothorax. The carapace functions as a protective cover over the cephalothorax.

Interesting & Beautiful.
Looks like a Lady's vest doesn't it? .....

@curlz Nope, no flesh. They are molts that wash up on the beach, so they don't have any flesh in them. And I do wash them, too. Though, the sand is sometimes hard to remove.
I think our site isn't set up for anything other than U.S. And Canada shipping right now (I thought it was, but my husband says it is not), but if you ever want to order, you can contact me on here, and we can set something up.

HEY GUYS!!! If you want isopods, you can get them this week on my site. According to Google and some weather people I know, it's going to be warm the rest of the week here. And our isopod shipping containers came in today. If you already ordered and wanted some, sorry. It had been too cold. Shipping is cheap though if you want them. They will go first class for less than $5 by themselves. Just a heads up for those of you who want to start a colony!

I really really want to start a colony!! But I live on campus, so the mailroom isn't open on weekends. Could you mail them on a day so that they won't arrive on the weekend? I don't want to place an order for them and then have them end up unhappy waiting in limbo until after a weekend...

They'll be fine sitting during the weekend. I can't plan it that closely since the postal service is a bit unpredictable. The isopods are really hardy. I originally received my through my campus post office after them sitting during the weekend, too. I was worried at the time, but they are harder to kill than that.

WOOHOO I'll be ordering some then I can't wait for the moose poop I ordered to get here either. The whole geology department at my school has caught the pet hermit crab virus (I got them, everyone realized how cute they are, and now there are three 10 gallon tanks with hermit crabs owned by Geo majors) and you should have seen the look on my research partner's face when I told her they ate poop and I had ORDERED some online for them hahaha!
I have a 29 gallon storage bin as a tank, and a spare 5 gallon tank with coco fiber as substrate. Would they be happy in the 5 gallon while I get them established? I read your care sheet and space is tight in a dorm for a new 10-gal...

Yep, they'll be fine in a 5. I just make 10 gallon my minimum because I like to have a zillion of them. You'll get half a zillion in a 5.

..... I totally get to tell my son that our cute, sweet, dear, precious crabs eat feces - and love it.

The moose and sheep poop were the first thing in my cart. Been waiting for months to try it! Hubby looked at me like I was nuts for a second, but he understood why. My mother on the other hand......CrabbyMom33 wrote: Same here! lol I just haven't managed to step across that line.
