I'm curious since you did a close up on the substrate, what do you use. The grain seems to be more rounded and bigger. And do you use the same in you "adult" tank? Congratz on the progress!

they have molted and metamorphose to a land hermit crab from day 53. They came on land on day 42.
Since that day, they have molted serveral times. I can't tell you how often. Now they 8 month old.

This is aquarium gravel (from a german company). The german grain size is 0,1-0,9 mm. (sorry I don't know the american name of it). And I put in some seashell grit.
And yes, I am using this aquarium gravel in my bigger tank, too. Near the water I put in some coral fragments. In my seawater pool they have got coral sand (living sand)

I don't like to take them up, for taking pictures. But I try to document their grows. All of them are sitting on a 5 x 5 quad paper at this stage. To show how small they are.




The access to our german bulletin board is not working, if you are not a member. So I took all "baby" picture and put them into an folder on my picture-book. I have tried to upload them sorted by stage of development. From leaving the water and climb to land, till today. Last picture was taken some days ago.

Those tanks are awesome! I am just beginning my journey into taking care of these amazing little creatures...I had two when I was younger, but they got out and died and I have been wanting to take care of them again as an adult and learn more about them, It is so cool you have babies too!
I would love to keep in touch with you in case of questions I may have!

Hi, Curlz! I'm in awe of your crabitat and the babies. I'd wondered if it would be possible to connect my tanks with a tube such as they have for rodents. You've got a magnificent set-up!!! Thank you so much for sharing it with us. I especially like the baby crab videos. So fun to watch them get around!

It is possible to connect two tanks with a tunnel for rodents. If it is big enough. Mine is 20 cm ø.
But the Problem is to cut out the holes for the tunnels in each tank

My tanks were build by an specialist.

I used to have hamsters and we had set up multiple cages with connecting tubes to give them lots of space etc, and it was fun to watch them running through the tubes. but as they grew bigger they would sometimes get stuck in the tubes if they met each other coming from opposite directions, neither was smart enough to back up and let the other pass, they always tried to shove their way through. they always managed since rodents can flatten themselves to fit through tiny spaces, but I'm wondering, do your crabs ever get hung up on each other in the tubes? do you ever have to pull them out to prevent a fight?

The tube diameter is 20 cm / 7.87 inches. The lenght of each tunnel side is 40 cm / ~ 14 inches. They have to grow up a lot to get stuck in my tube

to pull them out is no problem. Because of its size. And my crabs do not fight very often. I only saw something like a fight, while a ruggie girl had eggs and the boys besieged her

yeah it's always hard to judge the size of something in a photo. so they can pass each other side by side without issues? that's really cool
