Hey guys! I've had crabs for a few months now and I recently got a new one to replace the one who died. That way my little one won't be to lonely. I'm not sure what type he is though. I just got him today so I don't have great pictures.
I'm also wondering about an iso. I read that it's best to keep the new crab isolated for about a week to make sure it doesn't have mites, though the only second tank I have is a small plastic one when I bought my first. Is there a way to speed up the process and tell earlier if they have a problem with mites.
It'd also be nice to have a second opinion on what type my first crab is. This is Booger.
Thanks in advance for the help.
A new giant crab that needs an ID and iso questions
Re: A new giant crab that needs an ID and iso questions
Booger is definitely a purple pincher from what I can tell.
And your new one MAY be an Indonesian... Or a blueberry. I could be wrong, I'm not too familiar with other species other than straws and PPs.
And for an iso... As long as you bathe the new crabs in some saltwater and you don't find any mites, you should be okay. Not everyone uses an iso to my knowledge, and when I got mine I didn't do anything special. Just make sure he can distress properly.

Definitely not a blue or an indo, just another really dark PP lol But yeah, I agree on the bathing thing. If they come up clean you're good to go. What's that green sugary stuff on his leg?

Your new one is a purple pincher is well....and quite pretty! Honestly, after a bath and mite check, I usually put PPs from the pet store in the main tank. Just be watchful. I usually only iso any exotics I get just in case. Congrats! I love that pearled turbo on him!

Re: A new giant crab that needs an ID and iso questions
Thanks for everyone's input. The green stuff is the cheap "crab sand" that also came with my first crab. No worries, I don't use it in my main tank. I put him there after a quick bath and now he'll be put in the main tank with a mix of play sand and coconut fiber.
It's nice to know that they're both the same type. I was really surprised when I saw it come out of its shell with such a dark color.

PPs can be GORGEOUS dark colours My george actually just came up almost black: viewtopic.php?f=8&t=94663
I love how much PPs can vary But because of that, colour isn't a good method of IDing. It's all in the eyes

Haha the more I learn the more I love these little guys. Within minutes of introducing him to the tank I had the pleasure of watching him change shells. He's now in a beautiful brown petholatus shell. And this morning I watched him burrow down in the new substrate. It's like he waits for me to show off how awesome it is. Hopefully he'll come up soon so I can get some nice pictures. I think I'll name him Peaches.
