Wode,
Do you plan on keeping the question marks and dominos for a while? If so I'd be glad to order some when I move out. I'm trying my hardest to move out this summer so it's definitely a possibility. I'd also be interested in dubias. How big does that species usually get?

Re: The Hermit Crab Garden ~ New Items, Roach Pre-Order
I'll always have colonies of Question Marks and Dominos. They are gorgeous and a breeze to keep.
However, my Question Mark colony crashed at some point over the winter due to the substrate going bad and moldy. The last couple of days I've been sorting through 7 gallons of substrate to pick out as many mite-sized nymphs and sprinkle sized egg cases as possible so I can toss the sub and try to salvage the ones that are left. I won't have any to spare before summer is over, but with luck the colony should be back on track for next spring. I am completely bummed about that. It was not at all what I was expecting or looking forward to.
I should have Dominos into late summer/early fall, but I'm not sure how fast they'll mature. It's really kind of cool - there's one massive generation of big nymphs, and then nothing else that's over the size of a mite. I'm hoping the big ones don't turn into adults (non-mailable because they're so delicate) within the next few months, and I'm hoping the little ones get a lot bigger because they're too tiny to even touch right now!
I also don't have any Egyptian Sands that are a mailable size. They're all either adults or mite-sized, and they are very slow growers. I think they're on an opposite time-table where they're maturing right before it's safe to mail and then producing little babies all summer that mature again before the following spring. (ARGH.)
Dubia are a bit variable in size. I have some that are only an inch long, and others that are two inches . Not quite sure what is going on with my main colony either because there's only a single adult male right now and I can't find any males among the sexable nymphs. It's very very odd! I still have to sort through the back-up colony to see how it's coming along, but I'm hoping it's more even in numbers.

How long would the colony pack last... as in weeks, months, etc... or how many crabs would you expect this pack to feed? I only have about 40 crabs currently.

Re: The Hermit Crab Garden ~ New Flowers are Ready!
The way I feed - dry items along with fresh foods that we're eating - it would last my PPs over a year, which is why I consider it to be a true colony box. When you're feeding a crew of 70+ hermits, "colony" takes on a whole new meaning! Shipping weight is 3 lbs, so minus the box it's at least 2lb 10ounces of goodies. Without the bag of maple and oak leaves and packed tightly, it completely fills a 6x6x6 box so it is a large amount of food. Everyone will offer a different amount of food, will change it out at different periods of time, and will have crabs that eat at different rates, so sadly I can't say for sure how long it will last for anyone in particular, especially when there are exotics in the tank.happycrabbymama wrote:How long would the colony pack last... as in weeks, months, etc... or how many crabs would you expect this pack to feed? Re: The Hermit Crab Garden ~ New Flowers are Ready!
I hope to have Maple and Oak available outside of the boxes and kits come Sept/Oct. If the weather is weird again this year I don't know what to do as there won't be anything left by the end of summer, and I use it for all my crabs and roaches. We went from green leaves to snow in the span of one incredibly wet week after Halloween, and I've been rationing out what's left ever since to make it last until this fall.

I was looking at the calcium sources that you offer, and I was wondering if there was a difference between oyster shell and coral crushed and powdered, as far as their uses. Do different sized crabs prefer one over the other?
Six PPs and four Es!
Re: The Hermit Crab Garden ~ New Flowers are Ready!
I got my order earlier this week and put in a calcium cookie, bloodworms and a green bean. The next day they had devoured the bloodworms. This morning I came up and half the cookie was gone! I hope they didn't bury it somewhere....

You got the last one! I'll have it in the mail tomorrow.stewartx4 wrote:I ordered the colony box today. Can't wait!
The powdered tends to work better when used separately in a bowl, or mixed into food. It's smaller and it's more of a munchable size. The crushed is chunkier and works great if you wanted an addition to the substrate, or if you have larger crabs. Both small and large crabs can certainly handle either and I use them interchangeably with my jumbos and my teenies, but I know that a lot of owners with smaller hermits tend to like to offer smaller bits and more powdery foods.emceedi wrote:I was looking at the calcium sources that you offer, and I was wondering if there was a difference between oyster shell and coral crushed and powdered, as far as their uses. Mealworms, maybe? The one thing I can't sell right now is bloodworms, because I'm insanely allergic to them. I'm glad your hermits liked everything!AimeeZ21 wrote:I got my order earlier this week and put in a calcium cookie, bloodworms and a green bean. The next day they had devoured the bloodworms.
