egg crate and pvc quick questions

Post by CrabbySquirrel » Thu Oct 23, 2014 9:58 am

So I have all the components of the false bottom here, and have just a few last questions...

1. The pvc I used was small in diameter (1 inch) - it was what we had lying around so I used it. There should be no problem with that, correct? There will be about 40 of them lining the bottom to hold up the egg crate...
2. I got the egg crate from a local hardware store in the lighting section -- it seemed kinda flimsy to me at first! When I was carrying it to the car, it was flexing and bending (of course, it was a large sheet, 24x48) - but are there different strengths of egg crate? I'm guessing it'll still be OK, but I'm just making sure I didn't miss any posts about heavy duty egg crate, or something like that.... :?
3. In a 55 gallon tank with a cross beam across the top, am I going to be able to get the whole crate/weedblock/canvas sandwich in there in one piece? Can it slide right in at an angle and be fit into the bottom, or did anyone else have to break theirs up into pieces...

thanks

1. Thatll be fine but you might need to be creative and calculative with the placement.
2. I think egg crate is supposed to be lighter and easy to handle. I have not heard of crabbers using a different egg crate.
3. If you measure and cut perfectly, the flexibility should help you slide it in without incident. Otherwise you might want to do it in 2 pcs so that it doesnt break while youre trying to slide it in. Make sure u cut it easily with a giant filer, if you have one.

yeah you'll be fine, you'll be able to angle slide it in, i did with mine and it fits like a glove i've got a 60 gallon, just tilted it sidewise and in. finished cutting all the pvc pipe notches last night for the supports myself, so i'll hopefully be putting it in today, i'm using 1 1/2 inch supports, that are a little over 2" tall

and it does seem a bit flimsy, i think i even have a few random cracks and breaks in the middle of it from making it and moving it around, but i'm sure it'll be fine.
