Yep on the side above substrate line. I always have foil on hand so I've used that to insulate. I'm not positive but I think you could even wrap more than on side of your tank to help distribute the heat throughout.

I use a uth from the bean farm- and a small one from petco. The bean farm one gets crazy hot so I have a dimmer on it. I put foil over the uth and then cardboard over that.
I have the foil and cardboard stretched much further than the uth to hold in heat all over. It goes all the way down to the bottom of my tank to hold heat in the substrate. It makes a big difference!

wow, I gotta try that. its working though! it only does one little side but lulu isn't acting sluggish anymore and she was the only one on that side. i'm gonna move the big hide to that side so they'll all enjoy the heat :D

I just went on here and realized a 23x6 is cheaper here than a 6x4 from petsmart. so here comes a good heater :D

I know this thread is more than a month old but I wanted to thank you for this link. I was just looking to place my first order for an Ultratherm UTH. Bean Farm is where I looked first because it's usually the most suggested. Wow, shipping is ridiculous there! The size UTH I wanted was also a little cheaper at Reptile Basics. Amazon was more expensive as well. So thanks for saving me a little $$!! :D :D

I have a heat lamp on one side of my tank that fluxuates between 70-74 degrees. I just put a 1-5 gallon zoo med heater on that side hoping to get it up to 80 degrees constant. My fiance said that the cooler side of the tank is at 65 degrees...very bad. Should I put a bigger pad on that side to tey to get the temp up? I can't win wih this heat. Either the heat is perfect and the humidity drops or the humidity levels are perfect and the temp drops. Help!!!

shanedaman112 wrote:Well before I even read all this I just bought a uth, its definitely not big enough for the whole tank but its all we can afford D: anyway can you actually put a uth on the side of the tank then insulate it with the cardboard/foil thing?
I actually just did the same thing...I have a small fleece blanket draped around the top and side of the tank with the zoo med 1-5 gal heater on the side . Its actually working really nicely...but it might be the blanket
