Snail feast

Post by dinky » Mon Dec 29, 2014 5:42 pm

Was working in my garden and found lots of baby snails in shells, caught a bunch, rinsed in clear water and then put them in my PP tank. MegaTron and the other bigger pp's love rolly pollies and snails, so of course MegaTron in his attempt to hog them all walked right into the pile of snails......one of the snails started going up his BP, it was so funny to watch him use the antenna's to try and get this snail off....he did catch and eat it, but it took a while and it was a blast watching him. My other PP tat only left some partially uneaten snail shells, they enjoyed the feast.

If you get a chance, add rolly pollies, the crabs will set for hours and hours trying to catch them. Took my crabs a while, they ignored them at first, but they caught on to it and it makes for an interesting night watching them.

Rolly pollies are isopods/potatobugs. Theyre crustaceans, but i see them as bugs. And i am not a bug person, but i hate mites so i'm hoping isopods can control mites...
Thinking about it!!!!!

I didn't realize they would hunt them! That is hilarious! I'll have to go flip over some logs in the woods and see if I can find some!

I believe they are in the wood louse group of bugs, they are the ones with kind of a hard shell you find them under rocks and stuff and when you touch them they roll up into a ball.

Oh yeah, now I will say they was in the tank for some time before I actually saw them eating them, and I notice the bigger crabs seem to catch and eat them more so than the few small ones I have. Only problem I have is with rolly pollies .....they seem to breed faster than the crabs eat them and I do have to catch some and put them back outside. The snails go pretty quick, and they eat the soft shell as well. Earthworms are fun to feed, caught MegaTron trying to hold one down with all his legs as it wiggled one night and I sat right their watching him eat it, the smaller crabs will eat them, but seem to prefer smaller worms or MegaTrons left overs lol

I wonder if I could find a place that sells the right kind of snail. Ideas?

Not sure where you live, but they are just called garden snails as far as I know and you can usually find them under rocks and wood. Will see if I can find a good pic of one.

I appreciate that! I live up in CT soooo it's crazy frigid with snow on the way lol. I don't think I'm going to be finding snails!

Busy crying over the 133 gal tank I just looked at that was all scratched up....so wanted that tank ): Will try to get some pics for you, don't think they would ship well, even if we got a warm spell as I've had trouble keeping them alive for more than a couple days in a critter carrier, but maybe I'll try moss....if moss keeps them alive, we will wait for a warm spell and I will ship you some.
