I actually did create my crabitat with a tote. 16 gallons clear and I love how I can just see in without disturbing them. I'm working on a homemade climbing wall but just need the suction cups to hold it up . I added a log (designed for fish) and a branch for them to climb on (made of honey and alfalfa- totally safe did the research)

You made a branch out of honey and alfalfa? As in sprouts? Can i see a pic?

I didn't actually make it myself, I bought one for my husbands hamster and got curious about its composition. I did the research on the one for hamsters as well as for birds, exact same thing just one is bigger than the other. But you do need to remove about an inch to remove the metal screw, I'll post pictures .

I was wondering about this-I keep both of my hamsters in bin cages, and I still have the old plastic lid for the one bin-its the large Samla bin from Ikea. Do you think that would be large enough for 4 pps? And is it ok to use since my elderly dwarf hamster is in it currently? (Just want to make sure that I can re-use it. I would of course clean it thoroughly and the original lid has never been cut, and neither have the walls). Thanks

If it's 20 gallons or larger (can't find it on ikea's website so don't know how big it is) I'd say it's okay to use for 4 hermit crabs if you clean it thoroughly first.

It says 34 gallons, and is 30 inches by 22 inches (and is 17 inches tall). I know for hamsters, its big enough for two dwarf hamsters, who need larger spaces to be kept together.

Yep, I agree with you hermitcrabdc! If anything, i would like to add that a 34g tank will work will for that number of crabs for a few years, but when they get a bit larger - eg, the size over a golf ball - it is best to move them onto a larger tank/tote.

On that note: Would I be better off just buying a 55 gallon from the start? Would that be big enough for them for their entire lives?

If you're okay with a 55g for their entire life it may work, depending on how large they get. It seems though, once you start crabbing you want bigger and bigger tanks. Example, I think it would be really cool to get a 100g for our kitchen table (if it were okay with my parents) Or Kip, he's moving his 90 some crabs (?) into a shed. It'll take 4 crabs a few years to grow out of a 34g, also depends of how many deaths you have and how small they start out as. If it were me I would wait until they actually grow out of a tank or close to it to worry about a new tank/tote

This is true for most. I've upgraded and downgraded and upgraded again! I think I'm set where I'm at now (75g and a 40B with exoterra topper). The only upgrade I want to do is a topper for the 75, then I'm done....I think. I'm not making promises.

Oh my god, I just found this post and OH MY GOD. Guess whose crabbies are getting an upgraded home sooner than previously planned. I wonder if I can come up with a good enough excuse to keep the 45 gallon tank in the basement instead of getting rid of it right away...

Totes are great for crabitats if you can't get a large tank. I've never haf an issue with humidity.
