New used tank...

Post by theunartist » Thu Mar 12, 2015 7:37 am

I'm about to get a 46 Gallon Bow Front tank used, 36 x 16 x 21. Any suggestions on what to clean it with etc or what not to clean it with? I was going to get a med or large size UTH, any thoughts on this. I also use just a bit of lights for heating as well. My current 20 long, I use a small UTH with lights and stays at 78-83 degrees most of the time...

Thanks!

I use white vinegar to clean my tanks. If it's really nasty you can use bleach (10:1 water:bleach) and rinse, rinse, rinse. Air dry for a day.

I highly recommend Ultratherm UTH. I picked mine up from reptilebasics.com. Get the largest one that you can fit on the outside back all or mostly above the substrate line.

Just got the tank, larger than I thought and will be hard to sneak into place and it currently in my studio, hidden... :?

It was used as a Tropical Fish Aquarium. I also received 3 very nice pieces of driftwood and assume these would be safe to use with the hermit crabs after a bit of cleaning. I ready about boiling them to sanitize but one maybe 2 are bigger than any pot I have...

I've never baked decorations myself, I wouldn't know. Hopefully someone will reply who knows.

I soak wood in SW overnight in a bread loaf bag (nice and long) and bake them to dry before putting in the tank. You can pull that off in a 250F until you smell cedar. As long as the outside is dry, that's good enough for me.
