Two adoptions in one day!!!

Post by moonbeam » Sun May 24, 2015 7:26 pm

Today I got to adopt two sets of crabs! Very excited about my new babies! I've got to do a lot of moving stuff around, adding the new decorations I got and getting everyone in the big tank. But I can't wait to post lots of pictures once I get it all set up tonight :) With one of the adoptions I got a 20g tank, lots of decorations, shells and food! I can't wait to put it all to good use! I do have one question though. I got this hermit crab mineral block from zoomed with one of the adoptions. It has an expiration date and says it can feed one crab for 4 days? Has anyone ever used these? Are they safe? There's a lot of ingredients in them so I want to make sure they're crab approved before tossing them in. Did your crabs like it? ImageImage

Thank you! I'm so excited that even after 3 days of being out on the lake I'm just steaming along getting everything settled! Normally I'd already be staring at the back of my eyelids haha Image
I will be throwing the mineral blocks out! Thanks for the heads up!
So I'm taking a small break and I promised pictures which there will be plenty of eventually Image Firstly, check out the new tank and supplies!! Lots of new dishes, a bridge, and some really nice turbos! (Not all of the shells in the picture are new, I just ended up washing all of them at the same time) Image
And I'm already getting to know one of the new adoptees! This little guy has been sitting in the same spot watching me wash stuff for over an hour, antennae just going crazy. He seems very curious and outgoing! I'm thinking about naming him Curious George (can you tell I have a toddler? Lol).

Warning: this may be a bit lengthy lol. But when are my posts short right? Also please excuse blurry pictures or glares on the glass. There's only so much you can do with a phone camera :)
The tank is finished and the crabs are in! ImageImageImageImage
Now for my new adopted babies!
The first two crabs I adopted came with lots of goodies. I put quite a few things from that adoption in the tank so I hope it makes them feel more at home :) These two were with their previous owner for 4 years! They are both outgoing and curious. Their antennae never stopped moving last night which made taking pictures so hard but I love their spunk!
The first crab I noticed out of the two was Curious George. He is full of curiosity and loves to explore. He's quite a character! He's also beautiful! He's got this dusty grey navy color that I'm not sure really shows in his pictures. I'm in love with his coloration! ImageImageImageImage
In the second and third picture he's the crab on the left. These two pictures were as close as I got to showing his colors. The crab on the right is his tank mate Rosie. Don't ask me why Rosie but she reminds me of one. Her coloration is also beautiful! She's kind of like a dark sunset coloration. She's also very shy of the other crabs and got pushed around by several last night. I also noticed she's a tad bit clumsy compared to the others but maybe once her nerves calm she'll be more steady of herself. Either way she's eye catching. ImageImage
My second adoption came from right down the road. Speedy and Hercules were picked up at the beach for the kids who quickly grew bored with quickly. Their mom was so sweet in trying to make sure they found a good home and I'm glad they came to me! I'm worried about one of them though Image When they're owner was getting them ready for transport, they had to dig one of them up. The crab was molting. Fortunately she told me ahead of time and I set up an iso for him. I'm probably going to keep him in iso through his next molt as he dropped a leg on the way over Image I'm really hoping he pulls through.
I'm not sure which crab is which. I was told Hercules is the bigger one but with them being similar in size and trying to rush one into darkness, I didn't get a good look. I think the nonmolting crab is Speedy.
Speedy is so tiny compared to the rest of the crabs but don't let that fool you! This little guy is full of spunk! Rosie came over to take his spot under a log and he promptly let her know that was NOT happening. He's such a cutie! ImageImageImage
This is Speedy next to Rosie for size comparison. This was when he told her she couldn't take his spot. Image
And this is where he stood and watched her crawl away in victory. Like I said he's full of spunk! Image
There wasn't too much pushing last night. Wilson was my biggest offender. And Lil Mama wasn't too pleased with me but all in all it was a good night with very little drama. I am so happy the new crabs are here and I can't wait for them to get settled in! ImageImage

What beautiful additions to your crab family! With his "mine!" attitude, Speedy sounds like he's going to hold his own in the crabitat, regardless of size  .

Those colors are gorgeous! Keeping all fingers and claws crossed the molter pulls through with little worry.

Thanks guys! I'm so grateful I got to adopt these guys! They've been out exploring all day! ImageImage
Rosie spent the day playing with sand on the glass. She's just been playing in this spot all day lol. I think she's enjoying the new tank. Image
Still no signs from Hercules. This is my first molt above ground. I dug him a whole and put a hut over it. I've got honey, protein mix, crushed cuttle bone and bee pollen available along with salt and fresh water. I've got some shells that I am hoping will be size appropriate when he hardens up. Anything else I can do for him? I'm just trying to leave him alone as much as possible. I even took my isopod tank off the table so when I mess with them it doesn't bother him. I just don't know what else to do for him but wait and see.

And as I was writing that I heard legs in the lid. Curious George was exploring up top.

Saw the first signs of life from Hercules tonight! He was the molter who accidentally got dug up. I'm so excited! He's started to darken up and he moved from one side of the tank to the other and had even climbed a little bit! When he got here he was super pale and pink and soft. So happy to see him gaining some strength back!
Speedy, George and Rosie are all doing well as well :) Rosie and Curious George often come out during the day and napping hanging from the lid!

I am in love with these colors!
